Soil Surcharge at Abutment Case 2

I was hoping that wouldn't be the case but it seems like that's what it's going to end up being. Thanks for helping me out.

Soil Surcharge at Abutment Case 2

Thanks PEinc. I was able to find a supplemental publication to AREMA that explained in perpendicular situations it spreads over the width of the tie and depending on your ballast like you suggested BUT only up to a max of 14ft; I don't think any further reduction is allowed beyond this point...

Soil Surcharge at Abutment Case 2

Ok I figured out how to distribute it through ballast over a different area. I know in AASHTO when you're applying surcharge, there's a certain depth where it stops having an effect laterally on a wall; would that be applicable to a scenario like this or do I have to extend the rectangular...

Soil Surcharge at Abutment Case 2

I have gone through and read AREMA but would it only gives a paragraph. Would it still be the "q" calculation shown in the first part of the calc sheet? (the 80,000/(9x5) to get the rectangular distribution for a 1' strip?)

Soil Surcharge at Abutment Case 2

I can't find an example anywhere depicting case 2. All of the tables in the manual show simplified calculations for case 1. I understand how to calculate case 1 entirely but I am having issues visualizing how to compute the lateral pressures due to case 2 in regards to surcharge only. Would a...

    Equivalent Surcharge

Can someone clarify which of the cases would be correct for an infinite length shown in the drawing on how to convert the soil to an equivalent surcharge loading to load the wall?http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=47f9d296-8c60-45bf-be64-da9193c74b46&file=EquivSurcharge.pdf

    EI Training

Maybe you meant to put that you passed your EIT but never your PE to get your license?

    Tiered Drilled Shaft Retaining Wall

I have one last question. Is this drawing accurate when converting a mound of soil to an "equivalent surcharge load"? Is it really this simple?http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=8d5457a7-8191-42bc-8d56-c3aaf70704e9&file=EquivSurcharge.pdf

Integral railroad abutment and retaining wall

FixedEarth, In looking at the sheet you sent with the modified equation, I don't see how this is applicable. I see that it's the boussinesq equation but that would be for a track that is parallel to a wall face. I guess what I'm seeing if someone could explain would be how the load is...

Integral railroad abutment and retaining wall

I'm curious if someone could explain to me the railroad live load interaction of a railroad abutment sitting on drilled shaft piles that are part of a drilled shaft retaining wall whose tracks intersect the wall at a 90 degree angle. Rather than the tracks running parallel to this retaining...

Snailz - Search Limits - Global Stability & Design Test Load

So I have two questions in regards to soil nail walls. I posted this in another category by accident but here goes. I've been looking into soil nail wall analysis and haven't been able to find a thread on this yet. In regards to using Snailz, is there a benefit in limiting the search limit...

Live load calculation on a pipeline

Depends what the pipe is made out of. ACPA has some good info if it's made out of concrete. If it's made of plastic or steel, there are different equations you have to use in regards to AASHTO.

    Tiered Drilled Shaft Retaining Wall

I had something similar drawn on another sheet of paper but I wasn't sure. I'm pretty confident now on being able to convert the influence based off of the embedded portion of the shafts than a wall; the last few comments were very helpful. Thank you.

    Tiered Drilled Shaft Retaining Wall

You mentioned nothing in your previous response that I didn't already know which is why I'm here in the first place to see if I'm on the right track, hence this being a forum. If you haven't had any previous design experience with this particular case or have any other useful ideas other than...

    Tiered Drilled Shaft Retaining Wall

In geotechnical circular no. 7 provided by the fhwa, pages 120-121, "When the horizontal setback is larger than the height of the lower wall (H2), each individual wall will act independently and each wall must be analyzed and designed as two independent soil nail wall structures. If the...

    Tiered Drilled Shaft Retaining Wall

I'm just trying to get a better understanding because a lot of publications say many different things. What I don't understand is if you have a soil nail wall with the same configuration, if it's behind the bottom wall an offset distance equal to that wall height, you analyze both walls...

    Tiered Drilled Shaft Retaining Wall

Here is an updated picture. I drew the one yesterday in a hurry. Would you explain to me how the loading from the upper wall would exert a loading that the lower wall has to contain? I also included the failure wedge for active pressure behind the wall. I've been reading multiple places how if a...

    Tiered Drilled Shaft Retaining Wall

I am in need of some clarity. I have a retaining wall system that is composed of two cantilever drilled shaft walls, one behind the other, and my question is whether the top wall has any influence on the lower wall? __ l l_______ l l l l The top wall is 14' high, the bottom...
