NORSOK N-004 rev 03 considers the interaction between shear, bending moment and torsion (section 6.3.8.4). Eurocode 1993-1-1 also has some guidelines on this topic (something like applying a reduced yield strength in the combined normal force + bending check if the shear utilization specified...
Hello Crannog
If you can't make a straight line of 1.5t in the normal direction from the hotspot then you can apply the so-called method 1 (as i recall it), which only employs the 0.5t value, but multiplies this value with 1,11 as i recall.. You can look up the expressions for the effective...
Hi Crannog
Regarding: I cannot think of a case where probing a peak however would give a result that wouldn't be considered to be conservative?
My thoughts: Probing the hotspot stress directly in the hotspot is more conservative than the extrapolation indeed! The C203 from last year, made by...
Hi Cannog
It is always acceptable to increase the modelling detail by including the welds. You can include the welds and compare the new stress to the fatigue limit. But remember to compare the hotspot stress to the fatigue limit for the appropriate SN curve.. For a detailed FE analysis you...
Just make the Young's modulus temperature dependent and apply a temperature. That way you avoid slicing the beam and thus having discontinuous stress across edges all over your model. Just keep in mind that the environment temperature (found by clicking your static structural inside ANSYS...
Dear Orthohass
I'm afraid that I can't give you a mathematical or physical explanation within the FEM framework. My statement is based on my experience with the FEM.
As a rule of thumb the element mesh should be fine enough to obtain convergence on global load-deflection curves. For most cases it is impossible to obtain convergence with respect to strain development.
Hi
Alrihgt. Just be aware that, if you just installed v. 16, the Advanced Solve Proces Settings (accessed by clicking Advanced under Solve Process Settings) have been reset. So if you, or someone else, has entered Advanced Solve Proces Settings and clicked the GPU accelerator option (requires...
Hi there
Are you positive that you have applied the same Solve Process Settings in v. 16 as in v. 15, i.e. number of utilized cores, GPU accelerator etc? Did you solve the model on the same computer?
Hi Dirnad
Makes sort of sense :) I guess the stress stiffening effect is negligible when each dimension in a 3d element are similar, whereas for an element, e.g. LINK8, in which the transverse stiffness in one direction is small in comparison to the others, stress stiffening plays a greater role.
Hi Dirnad
As far as I'm concerned stress stiffening only has an effect on the stiffness in the other directions, i.e. it describes the coupling between the stress in a given direction to the stiffness in the other directions. In ANSYS it's called a stress-stiffness matrix, which is formed and...
