is the load swinging by any chance? the tractor speeding up and slowing down, or the tractor turning left and right would cause different speeds on the load... this would cause the centripedal force on the load to change and lead to lateral movement... this could cause the roller to hit against...

the only pressure you will develop between the cylinder and counterbalance is that of the load applied to the cylinder.
If thermal expansion occurs, it will simply push the cylinder out as the rod side is open to tank.
