    Sizing a Knockout Drum

Thank you for the reply. Could you please expound on what you mean?

    Sizing a Knockout Drum

I am trying to verify the size of a knockout drum, but I am not sure what all considerations must be made. I have tried to list the process conditions and the assumptions I have made. Conditions: Flow: 18,000 BPH Dry Crude Oil Vapor and Air (Concentration varies from 0%-70% vapor) Operating...

Wireline Unit on drill floor (Drilling)

I ran a wireline truck for a few years before getting out of the field. There's a list of reasons why wireline (WL) would be on a drilling site, these are the most common: 1) Drill pipe is stuck - they'll use WL to run either a backoff shot (they'll use an acoustic tool to find where the pipe is...

    Sonic Fluid Flow

I do not have an actual application. Just trying to understand why the maximum velocity for choked velocity is sonic velocity.

    Sonic Fluid Flow

Thank you everyone for the replies. It's funny, in a cursory search for the same question prior to posting, I found the same debates surrounding "choked mass flow" and "choked velocity". In my application, we have an 150PSIG natural gas supply from a gas company. This is regulated down to...

    Sonic Fluid Flow

Why is sonic velocity the maximum velocity a fluid will flow under typical conditions (fluid flowing from higher pressure to lower pressure). I know that flow becomes choked at Mach=1, but what physically causes this to be the case?

Valve flow with given Cv and Inlet Pressure

    Thanks! Much appreciated

    Bellows Seal Gate or Globe

What kind of fluid are you dealing with and at what temperature? Mechanical seals such as these are rated for pressure based on a specific gravity and temperature of the fluid. The lower the SG or the higher the temperature, the lower the pressure rating will be.

Valve flow with given Cv and Inlet Pressure

Thank you everyone for the responses. There were some assumptions that I could have made that I was over looking (The process line that this let's into is essentially at atmospheric - which gives me P2). One part I am still stuck on is determining if the flow will be choked or not even...

Valve flow with given Cv and Inlet Pressure

Thank you all for the responses. Looking at this section of the GPSA, I would still need to know the pressure differential across the valve to size the valve.

Valve flow with given Cv and Inlet Pressure

bljnv, this spec is the differential required for the valve to close. For the 2.5" with Cv=45, the minimum differential required to close is 5psig.

Valve flow with given Cv and Inlet Pressure

I have a 2" line that this will be going into. For the type of solenoid valve that I am looking for (2-way general service 120VAC normally closed) I landed on ASCO's 8210 series. They offer these from 3/8" (Cv of 1.5) up to 2.5" (Cv of 45). I also needed the valve to have a minimal operating...

Valve flow with given Cv and Inlet Pressure

It is listed on the manufacturer's website. Orifice Size (in): 1.25 Cv Flow Factor: 22.5

Valve flow with given Cv and Inlet Pressure

I am trying to determine the flow rate of gas (Methane T=80degF SG=0.6) for a valve that I have selected for my system. I know the inlet pressure (10psig) and the valve Cv (22.5). Looking at the flow equations for gas, it seems I have to first determine if the flow will be critical (choked) or...
