I understand your situation as my scope of work is similar to yours.
However, in Australia (at least in my State) you have a Standard (AS3798-2007 Section 8)which will more or less protect you from such situations. I believe you have such standards in US too.

If CBR swell is more than 2.0%, the soil is likely to suck water and get wet in the rain. In Australia some State Road Authorities reject fill material with CBR swell more than 2.0% due to the...
Fattdad,
I agree what you are saying however, the designer like to stick note to the construction drawing like "qualified geotechnical engineer to verify the allowable bearing pressure at the foundation".
What we do in such situation is to ask the client to provide us geotechnical report...
Brendeb1,
As you require maximum bearing pressure for carne pad (which is short term load), I am comfortable with Plate Load testing. However, if you want allowable/Ultimate bearing pressure for permanent structure (especially in Clayey Soil) full geotechnical investigation and testing is...
Hi Okiryu,
I don't know which country you guys are from however, in Australia there is general guideline published by Austroads when it comes to stabilisation of subgrade using lime.
We do CBR test for stabilised subgrade because we use a software called CIRCLY (mechanistic-empirical pavement...

Was the granular base wet during testing?
