    Un-ethical companies and their future

So if you are working to support this 'algorithm' and by providing the services it required you are supporting it to carry on functioning as it does then this is acceptable. But when you are doing this knowing that the company is operating in countries that have unstable democratic views (e.g...

    Un-ethical companies and their future

So I'm sure we are all aware of big projects and issues that have risen over the years, highlighting certain companies as unethical. Classic examples such as Bechtel, Shell, Exxon-Mobil (just off the top off my head, not aiming at O&G companies specifically), however they all consistently state...

    Best software to learn?

I want to be an analyst, I have worked on university projects in the past with FE software and industrial projects in various sectors (automotive and consumer products for example) so I understand the basics of the 'black box', I have experience with linear and non-linear analysis but I feel I...

Would you take a 20% pay cut to learn a specific software?

rotw: Yes you are correct, there are other significant issues that come into play such as location etc. I won't over complicate nor bore everyone with my personal matters, but I would agree with you that the decision takes on another element with these factors incorporated.

Would you take a 20% pay cut to learn a specific software?

The job uses ANSYS on a regular basis, in house training + on the job training, so it would definitely not be a one off course then never use it again. Sorry for the confusion I used $ as I know a lot of people on the forum are in the US, I didn't know there was such a large difference for...

Would you take a 20% pay cut to learn a specific software?

Great advice geewiz20! I think that is another big element, the fact the pay cut would include going to work for a consultancy and therefore more variety in projects...a lot of thinking to do still!

Would you take a 20% pay cut to learn a specific software?

Personally I think $41000 is still good for a young grad, but hey I'm pretty new to all this! I must day it is not only the software, it is the working environment and nature of the work which will develop my skill set more. Also, HamburgerHelper I don't fully understand what you mean when you...

Would you take a 20% pay cut to learn a specific software?

Ok so I looked again at the numbers (it was originally off the top of my head), I didn't think it was that relevant but the actual numbers are: effective salary due to Bonus etc. is ~$47,000. Whilst the other (after pay cut) is around $41,000, so looking at $6000 drop (~13%) With the numbers...

Would you take a 20% pay cut to learn a specific software?

Changing software is out of the question in my scenario! But I appreciate the suggestion. In response to rotw: I would use it almost every day and for most projects I would work on, along side a team of experts, so not just a one off course.

Would you take a 20% pay cut to learn a specific software?

Yes, I mean with ANSYS experience under my belt would it be better for my future prospects? Also the company offering a lower salary but training is a consulting firm so the work is likely to more varied and in my opinion more interesting, just another thing to consider

Would you take a 20% pay cut to learn a specific software?

Hello. Would you take a 20% cut in salary (around 7500 USD) to learn a specific software if training was included? I am a graduate and I'm thinking if I should leave my current job to work for someone that is willing to provide training using Ansys. Long term would this could be good but I'm...

    Best software to learn?

Hello. I am wondering if there is one software that is best to learn over others? Or is it really relevant? What I mean is would future employees be that bothered about not knowing a specific software, and more interested in the fact you understand finite element analysis and the underlying...

    Caterpillar Dynasty

finite element modelling relies on the storage of these 'symbolic equations' (built from geometry and performance data [such as material properties]) in matrices then solving through various methods. I don't see how these are different p.s. I am not trying to be awkward here I am just trying...

Working abroad (and long term travelling)

Very interesting responses here. I personally wouldn't hesitate to delay my career a couple of years if it meant I could travel the world. But, if you could somehow combine your passion for engineering with this then all the better. I totally agree with what Latexman says, I know people that...

    Caterpillar Dynasty

Hi I am interested in some simulation software I have heard of and read about briefly online: http://machinedesign.com/archive/software-simulates-many-disciplines-one-model This is used by caterpillar only, I am interested if anyone has used this before? It appears it can only be used for...
