    STAAD Feet vs Inches

This probably doesn't qualify as 'fairly easy'..... but here's an idea.... You might be able to cut & paste all the node locations from the Staad editor into excel. (in separate columns) Once into Excel you can divide all node locations by 12. (X,Y, & Z points). Then re-paste all the nodes...

    Aging Retaining Wall

Who owns the wall? A governmental entity or private organization? If private, then my recommendation would be to go through the steps of getting a geotech to evaluate; and then start saving money for a new wall. The geotech report might serve to help accelerate the replacement timeline.

    Air Content in residential concrete

Are you located in a cold environment with a frost line? The air entrainment is more important if you are worrying about freezing temps.

Lateral earth pressure on footings and keys of retaining walls

Hallelujah! Someone has found the same issue I have been wrestling with for the past 8 years. Unfortunately, I have not found an answer. :( I think that this is one of many glitches in what I like to call "retaining wall logic" The problem can be further exacerbated if the geotech says...

    Things you love/hate with mathcad

I was a happy Smath user until late 2024. Our IT department said we were no longer allowed to use Russian based software programs, so we had to switch away from Smath. We looked at several computational software packages, but elected to go with MathCAD. (We do work in Florida, and FDOT has...

new concrete retaining wall / abutting existing rubble wall

Could you do some thing like this for the transition. I'm not sure about the temp shoring. Could you post a plan view sketch?

Reactions of flat plate pinned on 3 sides

Download Visual Plate by IES Software. It's got about a 5-minute learning curve. They give you a free 30 day trial.

Mechanical Rebar Couplers - Minimum end Distance?

Koot - That's exactly what we were thinking. The coupler might end up serving as a headed bar end. We have not done any math yet, but it's possible that we do not need the full development length. Another option is to just tell the contractor to find some headed bar ends that can be...

Mechanical Rebar Couplers - Minimum end Distance?

We have a bridge column with #11 bars in it. Per the plans, the column bars were fully developed into the bent cap. The contractor accidently cut some of the bars 1ft short. The contractor's proposed fix is to add mechanical couplers to the bars and then have ~1ft extensions. (the...

Seal (mud) Slab or CSS Pad?

I have a large cast-in-place multibox culvert that will be constructed with varying fill on top of it. At the shallowest point, it will have ~5ft of fill on top, and at the deepest it will have 15ft of fill on top. We have called out BOTH a seal slab and a Cement Stabilized Sand (CSS) pad...

    AWWA C200 Pipe Welding

I have an existing 60" water pipe that was fabricated and installed in ~1986. The pipe is an emergency overflow line for a small stream that sits empty 99% of the time. But every now and then we get a 100yr+ storm event and the pipe carries a gravity flow. Per the original construction...

Best Practices for Structural Calculation Reports

To me, on of the purposes of written calcs is so that someone can follow behind and check your work. They are also beneficial to you so that you can explain what you did and feel confidence that you checked all the applicable limit states. I think it is a good habit to do the following: 1)...

16" pipe under existing wall footing

a simple sketch would help. Plan view and a section.

    Question for my Autocad junkies....

I don't know how to do it, but I'm sure a simple LISP program could be written to do automatic saves and dump the files into a temp folder.

    Box culvert base slab

I think you need to determine your desired flowline of the channel; and then work with a geotech to see if improvements need to be made to the soil.

W Beam Welded to side of HSS Column

Could you add a little corbel or seat below the beam?

CJP Welds - HSS to Beam Flange

Are you just worried about the weld, or the overall connection? Is this a full moment connection? Aside from welding the HSS to the flange, I'm thinking you need to get the opposing side beam flange engaged with via plates tying the two flanges together.

    Parking Area Retaining Wall

This is more money, but what if you drop the footing another 1.5 to 2ft? Then, you can pick up some more passive pressure?

    Equipment Stand

When you say that people will be under the platform for welding etc... That makes me think that the positioning of the equipment might change over the years. If it doesn't have much design/material cost, then I would assume that the equipment could be positioned in any location on top of the...
