Using Standard B16.9 Concentric reducer for a vertical stripper.

Dear all, I am working on a produced water stripper, which has bottom shell diameter as NPS 18" with length of 1250mm and Balance stripper is NPS 12" in dia. Hence we have to use a conical transition from 18" to 12", I wanted to check with you guys if anyone have ever used standard B16.9 conical...

Nozzle MDMT calculation (Neck pipe thickness)

Whle doing the calculation for nozzle MDMT as per UCS-66(a), Assuming that we have a nozzle with Pipe, flange and RF pad, While concluding to value of MDMT what shall we consider the thickness of pipe, Nominal or reduced thickness(considering 12.5% under tolerance). Definition of governing...

Use of original bolts for hydrotest

We have bought standard bolts, but not yet arrived in shop. AI is claiming that as per U1 (e)(3) bolts are in scope of ASME and shall be used during hydrotest to confirm that bolts are suitable for application.

Use of original bolts for hydrotest

Dear all, Good morning. As per U1 (e) (3)even bolts for manways and handholes fall under scope of ASME section VIII Div.I. We are buying standard ASME bolts, since these are standard items do we have to use original bolts for hydrotest. If not please give code reference or interpretation...

    Instrument Nozzle flange rating

Dear all, Our client is asking for 300# flanges for instrument connections on vessel, on which all process connections are of 150#. What is the technical reason behind this? I checked with few people they say this is to prevent inventory issues. This response couldn't satisfy me because on...

ASME B16.5 Flange with partiton plate for exchangers

YES, I agree that Appendix-2 calculation doesn't work for B16.5 flanges, but i think it is safer to go with APPEndix-2 rather than than getting in to an argument with AI. If i will attend next audit for our shop, i will surely discuss this with team leader for our region. Regards, Stephen

Localized Hydrotest using external jacket to check final Field Weld Joint

Providing break flange to the equipment is also a considerable option.

    SA-182F316L low stress material

Dear mike, On further discussion regarding this with our AI, conclusion is as below, These different stress values have been RECOMMENDED for SS materials where bending stresses are predominant. I feel the manufacturer should have good knowledge and strong justification for use of higher...

ASME B16.5 Flange with partiton plate for exchangers

Dear Mike, I have been working on this issue, and have come to a conclusion that if ASME B16.5 flanges are used a calculation as per Appendix-2 is required based on a code interpretation below, Regards, Stephen

ASME B16.5 Flange with partiton plate for exchangers

Dear Mike, I didn't find any direct statement limiting bolt load, but what is your view on below statement. B-1 GASKET MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION Classification of gasket materials and types is shown in Table B-1. Other gaskets that result in no increase in bolt loads or flange moment over...

ASME B16.5 Flange with partiton plate for exchangers

I can understand what you are saying, but issue is i cannot find a particular statement anywhere that says B16.5 flanges can withstand full bolt load or it cannot.

ASME B16.5 Flange with partiton plate for exchangers

Dear All, I have been using ASME B16.5 flange for exchangers with or without partition plate. Recently i have come across TEMA RCB-11.7, which provides guidance to modification of WM1 and WM2 which are bolt load for operating condition an d gasket seating. I went through various posts which is...

Support ring for Packing inside vertical vessel

I need to design a ring supporting packing inside a vertical vessel, I have started with Roark's formula for stress and strain but confused which case i should consider. I would like to know if there is any other approach.

Really Good Idea Mike, thank you.

    SA-182F316L low stress material

No confusion regarding L, it stands for low carbon content improving weld quality of SS. anything above operating condition should be incidental, causing material exposed to higher tension for short period of time at certain operating temperature. or else we can multiply operating condition...
