I'm planning on building a small home kiln for metalwork/metalclay. I'm investigating the use of Silicon Carbide rods, instead of the standard resistance coil. Does anyone have links to DIY information for SiC rods and/or wiring information?
Hello @Compositepro,
I wanted to follow up on your post about allowing the bushings to slide into place. How long does this normally take? I'm assuming the sliding into place happens while the spindle is turning?
I have clamped down the pillow blocks, and ran them at about 1/4 normal use...
Perhaps this question is so obvious, that I can't find a tutorial online. I have a 10mm motor shaft and a 15mm spindle shaft. I'm trying to match a pulley system with a ratio of ~2:1 (the smaller pulley on the motor.)
I don't know how to find two matching pulleys. I vaguely understand the idea...
OK. It was pretty simple. The tap was crap :D It was new, but I replaced it and the aluminum threaded like going through butter.
Thanks to all for the input and suggestions.
@3DDave
Based on looking at the camfer, I think it's a bottoming or plug tap. I've ordered some higher quality taps, as well as a 10.9 mm drill bit. I'll let people know what works. Thanks for the advice!
I'm trying to hand tap 1.5cm thick aluminum with an m12 1.75 tap, but can't get it to tap more that two thread revolutions before turning it becomes impossible (I actually damaged the wrench attempting to get it to continue turning.)
I'm using a 10.2mm drill bit with cutting fluid to drill all...
@Tmoose,
Thanks for the post. The shaft is 14.97 mm cylindrical (not tapered.) The bearing bore is cylindrical.
The shaft is held in place by collets, which have an off-center oblong opening that matches an off-center, oblong protrusion on the bearing. I assemble the unit by inserting the...
I'm very much an amateur in this subject.
I've recently purchased a lathe spindle rod threaded for use with a K01-50 lathe chuck. Dimensions 153mm long, 14.94 mm diameter. The rod is not tapered. Link below. I'll be mounting it in in two SKF SY15FM pillow block bearings.
To check the fit, I...
Hi EdStainless,
Thanks for the interesting post. I'm very interested in learning about metallurgical techniques, from an academic standpoint, although - youre right - thats far beyond my needs.
Although, I used borax as flux initially (and tried quite a lot ultimately) and it was not enough...
Hello tbuelna,
Great answer. Thanks for that! Question, is there a low-hazard way to chemically de-oxidize the metal? I'm not thinking about the Tin (since it's so cheap), but in this case thinking about bronze powder.
Thanks!
Hi Blacksmith37,
Good suggestion, Actually, I've done that as well, but I find the crucible easier to pour small molds. Mostly, I was just curious about the physics behind why powder doesn't melt as well as pellets (my chemistry background).
I've stuffed the powder into a tool chest...
I'm a biotechnologist, however I am learning metallurgy as a hobby. I have a question I hope the professionals can help me understand.
I've been working with the easy metals (pewter, tin, silver). I melt the metals for casting in a ceramic crucible with a handheld butane torch, using borax as...
