Hi All,
We replaced the rod packing seal of our Methane compressor less than a year ago. When we inspected last week, we found sign of wear on the back of the cups, apparently due to spinning of the adjacent radial ring in its position. I cannot figure out how the ring can rotate in the cup as...
The annular gap is 76mm OD (Packing case hole) and 70mm ID (piston rod). the equivalent orifice plate is 33mm in diameter. in 55 bar (dP) flowrate would be very high.
Hi georgeverghese,
Thank you for your reply. We do have a DN40 vent on each distance piece, but as I said it is not a fit for total seal failure as described in API 521.
API 521 requires to model the leakage with a square edge orifice plate equal to the clearance between the piston rod and...
Thank you Johnny.
I totally agree with you. Actually I am inclined to advise our team against changing the vent size and location and like what you said my experience with the packing seals is that they are very forgiving and reliable.
Can I ask you a bit more about your compressors, what size...
Hi all,
I am working on a HAZOP scenario regarding the rod packing seal failure of our reciprocating compressors.
We have a few recips is our LNG plant, stabilization unit. The compressors have lubricated rod packing seal. The HAZOP scenario is failure of the lubricator, loss of lubrication...
Thanks so much for your recommendations.
Is there any standard for alarms and trips of mechanical seals failure?
I found some guidelines in API-614 for dry gas seal systems (see attachment), but nothing for mechanical...
Hi LittleInch,
Thanks for your reply. About allowable amount of leakage you are right. You are also correct about trip at high-high leakage. My question is whether this trip should be automatic (hardwired) or manual (by operator)?
For both dry gas seals of the compressors and mechanical seals...
I would be grateful if you could assist me with a short response to the following queries:
• Is automatic mechanical seal failure trip (either primary or secondary seal) implemented on pumps that are handling hydrocarbons of C5 or lighter fractions?
• Is it normal practice to monitor the health...
