How is the soil-wall friction angle determined, rigorously?
From my studies, I have been told to take is as ½ - ⅔ of the internal friction angle. But how does one get to this point. I have yet to find an explanation in any literature.

With respect to a thin steel plate:
Initially, it did not occur to me a differential element would be under tension about the major axis, and negative tension about the minor axis. Negative tension would be compression, presumably explained by Poissons effect.

Reading Das Principles of Geotechnical Engineering, chapter introducing shear failure.
A statement was made, that Mohr himself claims “all” material fail by a combination of shear and normal stresses.
1) Where can one find the supporting arguments?
2) What about a general case of a thin steel...
