    Stay bolts

As per ASME sec 1 on stay bolt welding, pertaining to firetube boilers. Full penetration welds are specified. Does that require full root penetration with reinforcement on the waterside? Thanks

    Stainless steel performance test fail

In performing this test Lincoln excalibur 309L-15 3/32 dia stick electrode 70amps dcep with a "stiff" arc force setting. After failing this test with same parameters but different electrode manufacturer and suffix -17 the test passed. This only occured on the face bends as the root bends were...

    Stainless steel performance test fail

Can excessive amperage used while stick welding 309l cause failure of a guided bend test when using carbon steel pipe? Interpass temp to high? Degredation of electrode coating when using to high an...

    Corrosion of heat affected zone.

Hi folks. I'm a maintenance welder at a steel mill. We are having trouble with corrosion at the heat affected zone in the butt welds of the rolling solution piping on the cold rolling 4 stand. The pipe is both A53/106B carbon and the welding process was SMAW with 6010 root and 7018 fill and...

Min and Max requirements for basemetal.

Afternoon, Is there a table in the ASME code that refers to min and max requirements for chemicals/alloys of base metals? I was trying to compare the above with the MTR I have for this material, all I could find was a table for this grade of pipe and hard numbers. The exception being Manganese...

Pics of pipe or vessel failures

Good Morning, Does anyone have a good website that shows pics of pipe and vessel failures caused because of defective welds. I would like to show these photos to our welding apprentices to illustrate the importance of sound weld practices. Thanks.

    Code of Construction

I have been reminded by my AI that when developing PQR's and WPS's that I need the pertaining code of construction to which the WPS/PQR are to be made. I am curious, how are shop WPS/PQR's made and then applied to vessels and piping when each code has it's own rules? Can these WPS/PQR's be used...

    WPS/PQR

XL83NL Thanks. Now that you mention it that reminds me of another question pertaining to codes of construction. I'll post another question on the matter.

    WPS/PQR

Thanks David, I can't remember where I read this, but I was under the impression that the WPS came before the PQR, which doesn't make any sense.

    WPS/PQR

Do I need to develop a WPS before a PQR and if so why? It seems like "putting the cart before the horse" Thanks

    QW 462.3 (a)

I've been in a friendly debate about the actual width of a transverse root bend on pipe versus a face bend on pipe. My question. Does the actual surface area of the root bend specimen have to be the same as the rest of the specimen? In this case the specimen needs to be 3/4" wide. Thanks
