    Opinions on design

I came here to recommend batter piles, looks like BA has it covered. Settlement will definitely cause them to shift. Alternatively, you could put some deadman anchors in the tops of the caissons. Depending on what type of soil it is and what its angle of repose is, you may consider using...

    Design of concrete structure underwater

Never say never. What about immediately after construction? What if they need to do maintenance on whatever it is that you're designing, and what if maintenance requires emptying the water out? You should design it like JedClampett suggested. Also, #4's @ 16" isn't adequate, even for min...

    Slide Rule Era

SRE - thanks, just sent you an email.

    Slide Rule Era

KootK - I can definitely build a site that's on par with SlideRuleEra's former site, and I will gladly accept your offer to offset the startup costs if you're willing to chip in. I'm a little rusty, but I've registered, built, and managed websites before. I'll start working on it a bit this...

    Truss Lifting Analysis

Agreed. Personally, I'm a bit fan of sandwiching the bottom chord between a couple clip angles or shear tabs. The bottom chord doesn't get bolted or welded to the clips, you just sandwich it in between them so that it's free to move in the axial direction (the clips just prevent the bottom...

    Slide Rule Era

SlideRule - I'm grateful for all the work you put into your site over the years. It's provided a lot of value to our community, and I don't think there's anyone else out there with a repository like yours. Thank you for considering my suggestion. Been a while since I built a website, but I'd...

    Slide Rule Era

SlideRuleEra Would you be willing to create a Google account, upload those files into Google Drive, and share it with the public? Google Drive gives 15GB of space for free, you can access it through your web browser, and all you'd really need to do is drag/drop some files and let em upload...

Reinforcing of Existing Wood trusses for RTU

You could get an identical truss and sister it to the existing one

US Standards for Stairs, Walkways and Handrails

If the stair is part of the means of egress system, refer to chapter 10 of your state's building code for dimensional requirements and chapter 16 for load requirements. Also check ASCE 7-10 for load requirements, they might differ from the building code depending where you're at. If it's not...

Ram Elements vs STAAD PRO - Should I battle to get other another brand of Software

I use RAM nowadays, but I used to use RISA 3D to design lattice towers. I really liked the fact that, in addition to "tension only" and "compression only", RISA has a 3rd option which is "Euler buckling". It's really useful for things like tension only X-bracing. Basically, it allows the...

    Chemical Fastener

HILTI HIT-HY 200 + piston plugs (HIT-SZ or HIT-IP) should work. Check out section 5.22 of the ESR linked below. https://www.hilti.com/media-canonical/ASSET_DOC_16368681_APC_RAW Here's a link to the HILTI site for HIT-HY 200...

    Hiring a bridge engineer?

As someone who used to design farm structures, I think you're going to have to put a lot of thought into this. Designing a one-size-fits-all bridge is going to be challenging. Places like California and Chicago will require this to be stamped by a licensed SE (not a PE). It was easier in...

Semantic Sunday: Hold-down, Holdown, or hold down?

More punk!! Clever name. I've seen Reel Big Ghoti 3 times, but I've never even heard of these guys. I guess they're still making music though, just found a vid on YouTube of their set at Furnace Fest from about a month ago. Thanks for sharing, gonna have to check these guys out. Banana Man...

Semantic Sunday: Hold-down, Holdown, or hold down?

Simpson, Mitek, and Clark Dietrich call em holdowns, so that's what I call em too. I doubt it really matters, but I can imagine some fringe case scenario where a shear wall fails, a court case ensues, and the plaintiff (contractor) tries to allege that the defendant (engineer) spec'd...

Best Practices for Preliminary Sizing on Drawings?

I wouldn't call out sizes without doing the calcs. Too much risk that someone will see the drawing a jump the gun.

    PROFIS Anchor

Simpson still offers free anchor design software.

    Steel coating for harsh environment

I worked at a chemical plant and used hot dip galv in most areas. Stainless steel is problematic because it's weaker and like 7x more expensive.

    Using Shop Drawings as Leverage

Why not just mark it up with a note stating something like this, and mark it "approved if subsurface conditions have been rectified, and not approved if they haven't"? Contractor shall ensure that subsurface conditions are rectified in accordance with the project design documents. See drawings...

    Forces on Fences

As far as chainlink goes, it depends on the diameter and spacing of the fence posts. Consider that if it can hold 2 MMA fighters, it's probably good enough for average pedestrian.

Which of these structures is stronger?

A, because the direction of the force puts the arch into tension. In B, the arch would try to splay out, and my gut feeling is that this would induce some additional bending into the adjacent line segments (kind of like a P delta effect).
