ST Welded Connections - Did Anyone Know This?

The firm I work for has always designed our own connections, we don't delegate to other firms, and as such we've got a pretty good library of connection details. On a recent project, we used a detail that we have used selectively for 20 years... an all-welded ST connection that is intended for...

Does Composite Decking Brace The Top Face of 2x12 Joist

Wow, I really appreciate everyone's input on this. There has really been a lot of discussion surrounding the issue, probably more on this thread than on all other posts I've ever made combined. That said, I would like to remind people that this is not an eqo measuring contest, neither is it a...

Does Composite Decking Brace The Top Face of 2x12 Joist

I am designing a deck for a client and they have told me they want to use 1" nominal thickness Trex composite decking on 2x joist. I know from experience I can count on 1x boards, wood sheathing, or even gyp to brace most 2x material. I've even read literature about using light gage metal wall...

NDS Shear Reduction Factor (Cvr) at Notches

This is a question born out of curiosity more than anything and peripherally related to some research I was doing. I would also like to preface this by saying I am ignorant of the full scope of European design codes so forgive me if I am missing something obvious. In the design of glulam beams...

Sill Plate Crushing @ Ground Floor on Concrete Foundation Wall - How Concerned Should I Be?

Skipping the sill plate altogether is a possibility in a lot of locations where I don't have lateral braces coming down. Where I do have braces, I am relying on the plate to drag a certain amount of lateral load into the foundation wall. There are a lot of braces, so the load from any particular...

Sill Plate Crushing @ Ground Floor on Concrete Foundation Wall - How Concerned Should I Be?

I am working on a bit of a unique wood structure. Multiple stories, primarily storage, many wood posts carrying a fairly high load to the foundation. I've sized the sill plate at the ground floor to not crush when carrying the load of these heavy posts. The post sizes are set in stone and...

Bolts Tightened to Full Pre-Tensioned Load - Axial Capacity?

Tomfh: The purpose is to provide some flexibility for erection in the field. The angles are pre-cut and need to be able to be installed in the field.

Bolts Tightened to Full Pre-Tensioned Load - Axial Capacity?

CANPRO: I hate it when its such an obvious solution and I just have to think "Why didn't I think of that!?!?!?". Thank you very much, that is a great idea! klaus: I'm not sure what you mean by "sense"?

Bolts Tightened to Full Pre-Tensioned Load - Axial Capacity?

I should also mention that the bracing has all be designed as "compression only", but I am aware that a brace doesn't actually know that it is "compression only" and will likely experience some limited tension loads at certain points in its working life.

Bolts Tightened to Full Pre-Tensioned Load - Axial Capacity?

Good morning, all. I have a little bit of an odd situation come up. I am working on a structure which has thousands (not an exaggeration) of angles as a part of horizontal trusses that are a part of the lateral system. They are all required due to the nature of the structure and providing...

Reinforcing Connection Angles Subject To Prying Action

Thank's everyone for your help. It is kind of what I was afraid of, that this is a square peg-round hole situation. I think I just need to step back and look at a different style of connection.

Reinforcing Connection Angles Subject To Prying Action

Thanks in advance for any and all help. I have an odd situation. I am doing some subcontracted connection design and have had an issue come up on a braced frame connection. I have a W14x61 column, a W24x55 beam, and an HSS10x10x3/8 brace coming down to the joint from above. The beam's...

    ACI Minimum Spread Footing Reinforcement

Thank you in advance for any help on this issue. I have an unusual situation that has come up. I am designing the footings for a modular structure. The frost depth is 33" and the contractor wants to pour solid concrete from the top of grade down to the bottom of the footing. This is fine, easy...
