    Grading Tolerances

If you care to become a survey nerd, the National Geodetic Survey has a webanar series that often addresses high precision uses of the Global Positioning System. For example this months offering GPS Campaign Surveys for Estimating Vertical Land Motion to Inform Coastal Management (the video...

DC circuit breaker capacity vs time constant

Cataloged circuit breaker (AC and DC) interrupting ratings need to be respected, changing trip curve time constants does not change the interrupting rating. IE if the circuit breaker is rated at 120V and 50,000A interrupting capacity, exceeding the interrupting rating can result in the breaker...

    Grading Tolerances

The slopes you describe are flat enough that given that the curve of the earth surface is about 1 foot per mile, if your ditches have significant length you will need to set grade stakes using geodetic leveling. For work like this it is beneficial to the project if a licensed surveyor sets the...

MPCB (motor protection circuit breaker) - Earth Fault

Seems like applying a MPCB to a heater circuit would be a misapplication, in the NEC world the correct device would be a Circuit breaker with ground fault (30mA?) trip. Please provide a snapshot of the device label. Do you have an estimate of the available fault current? As often stated by...

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PSMG) - Searching for references and standards

I think the above deal with most of the questions the OP presented, so the following might be a bit of a rabbit trail. Wikipedia Link - Permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) A PMSG can only work as a constant voltage source when the system it connects to has sufficient size to provide...

    Uncoupled slip-ring induction motor speed

At zero torque load, slip is nearly identical for all rotor resistance selections. As the torque load increases, the impact of increasing resistance on motor speed becomes large. figure from http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/alternating-current/chpt-13/wound-rotor-induction-motors/

Burst Pressure estimation in Ansys. Solver does not stop when failure happens

Your model is not too far from reality. Overpressurization often results in fishmouth failures. The comments above about end connection constraints while valid can be ignored if your purpose is to experiment with the software to see what kind of failures occur with different constraints. This...

    FEMA's Outdated Flood Zone Maps

FEMA FIRM's generally assume floods are defined by a free pond elevation. For debris flow, the flow energy makes the free pond elevation almost not relevant. The linked video includes examples in the field of both the trigger areas, and some locations where the flow overshot the pond elevation...

Thick wall / high pressure pipe wall thickness calculations

See the attached paper on stress in thick walled cylinders with closed ends. The calculations are more difficult than are used in B31.1 or 31.3.

    Ferry Dock Collapse

Setting camber in walkway like this can be done by blocking the lower cord to the desired shape before welding in the diagonal members. For a structure like this camber is mostly cosmetic ie it does not change the member stresses. All of the questions regarding correct engineering calculations...

back pressure valve for sewer forced main.

My choice for this sort of application is a duckbill valve (like the red valve tideflex). These valves are very tolerant of trash, and can be installed horizontally. If you need more backpressure and can tolerate "active control" a pinch valve will handle ground up sewage solids.

Construction Estimating Methods for Process Plants

When I was actively estimating, I used a combination of RSMean's, Richarson's, and historical data adjusted by one of the St Louis FED industrial construction producer price index. Richardson's has an industrial focused cost data product.

    Ferry Dock Collapse

The rub rails appear to be unstiffened aluminum sheet, This is going to provide a negligible additional amount of load capacity, as any significant compression will cause it to buckle.

Black roll underground poly pipe question

Deaerator Design and Operation Report Making Help

    1. All good deareators are counterflow. First steam must heat the drops, inward flow of condensing steam will prevent difusion of non condensibles. Once the drop is heated to steam temperature, noncondensible gas can difuse out of the drops. Smaller drops have less distance for the gas to...
