    Glass design building code

Hi there, Are there any local building codes or standards that outline the requirements for structural glass design. Preferably Canadian code or standard. Thank you.

Vertical brace frame at vertical slotted connection column

Thanks so much for the help. This is the exact situation Im dealing with.

Vertical brace frame at vertical slotted connection column

Does that mean the forces in the working point of the brace at roof level need to be transferred into horizontal components only since there cant be a vertical component? Thanks

Vertical brace frame at vertical slotted connection column

Hi there, Is there any problem with adding a vertical brace frame to a column where the top of column is connection to the roof framing via vertical slotted connection (doesnt supporting gravity load from the roof and allows deflection in the roof beam). Thanks

Pass through factored loads at columns

Hi Jayrod, I think im having trouble understanding what you said. The diaphragm shear capacity is spread evenly along the entire gridline at around 10kN/m. (600kN of seismic load on this side divided by 65m, which is the width of the building))

Pass through factored loads at columns

Hi There, I received a question from the structural steel supplier asking to provide pass through factor loads at typical columns for a project. The building has a conventional brace frame seismic force resistant system. I have about 600kn of horizontal factored seismic force going through the...

Load Bearing Concrete Block Wall on Hollow Core Slab

It sits perpendicular to the plank at about midspan. Thanks everyone for the help. Just needed to know if there was anything important i needed to consider for the connection to the coreslab or if it could just sit on top of it.

Load Bearing Concrete Block Wall on Hollow Core Slab

Im not sure how much is too much load. Ive got about 15kN/m (specified dead load) + 4 kN/m (specified live load) on top of a 250mm core slab. Not a high seismic area.

Load Bearing Concrete Block Wall on Hollow Core Slab

I understand the condition where the concrete block wall is continuous. But is there a condition where just the core slab supports concrete block wall above?

Load Bearing Concrete Block Wall on Hollow Core Slab

Hi there, Has anyone specified a load bearing concrete block wall that supports the roof structure on top of hollow core slab? I know coreslab suppliers might be able to accommodate the superimposed live and dead line loads but I dont know how the block wall would tie into the core slab. Is...

    Moment Resistance of Plain Concrete

Hi there, How do you calculate the moment resistance of plain concrete? my situation is a 150mm concrete wall under lateral wind loading. Is there reference of this in the Canadian Code? Thanks

    Freestanding masonry wall partition

Hi There, I have a 3000mm high freestanding concrete block wall that is 140mm thick and acts as a partition inside a building. The height of the building is well over 3000mm and i cannot laterally support the top of the block wall by framing it into the roof. As per the masonry code in Canada...

Elevator Hoist Beam and Pit Design

Hi There, How you design elevator hoist beams? Do you only take into consideration just the car and passenger weight, or both plus the counter weight? How do you design elevator pits? Do you only consider the buffer impact load plus the static load of the car, or both plus the vertical loads...

Lateral Building Stability under Wind Loads

Hi There, When designing a whole building for lateral stability against wind loads, do you consider the height of the building under wind loading as the full height or full height minus half of the first story? Thanks.

    Unsupported compression length of beam

    Thanks guys, i appreciate it

    Unsupported compression length of beam

Hi there, For beams under gravity loading, what would you consider the unsupported compression flange to be? If its supports a metal roof deck with no joists framing into it, would the unsupported compression length be the total span from column to column? Or do you consider the unsupported...
