    Phi Angle in CU Test

    Thanks EireChch!!!

    Phi Angle in CU Test

Since CU is an undrained test, does it not imply a phi=0 condition? In other words, is the phi angle we get from total stress envelope in a CU test of any use? Am I understanding it correctly?

    Fully Softened Shear Strength

Thank you so much to all of you for the replies. Much appreciated and things are much clearer now.

    Fully Softened Shear Strength

Mike, I don't fully follow what you are referring by "which phi angle". There are three equations relating fully softened angle with liquid limit and clay fraction. I used the relevant equation based on LL and clay fraction. Am i missing something? Okiryu, I downloaded the spreadsheet and it...

    Fully Softened Shear Strength

Mike, I am using the correlations given in 2014 ASCE paper by stark. The correlations are between LL and fully softened angles for different clay fractions. The paper is Gamez, J. and Stark, T.D., “Fully Softened Shear Strength at Low Stresses for Levee and Embankment Design”, ASCE Journal of...

    Fully Softened Shear Strength

Hello For a slope stability project I am involved in, we ran CU tests with pore pressure. We also ran hydrometer tests for the same sample. The drained angle of friction i am getting from the CU envelope is smaller than the drained fully softened angles that i get using the correlation between...

    Peak Friction Angle

    Understood. Thanks

    Peak Friction Angle

Thanks very much Gents. This is good stuff. We have used the direct shear test results on remolded samples before on projects but we did not use that test on the current one. I will go through the CGPR publication that fattdad mentioned. I read somewhere that undrained strength of clay varies...

    Peak Friction Angle

Thanks fattdad and geg!!! I am involved in a project involving slope stability we are using fully softened parameters for analyses. The calculated value of fully softened angles (we are using normal stress and shear stress relationships from work by Duncan, Stark etc.)are less that what we...

    Peak Friction Angle

Hello All, The angle of friction that we get from the Mohr's circle envelope of a CU test, is that the peak friction angle? Thanks
