ASME VIII Div-1 Appendix 13 (Obround Vessel)

I did a Calculation of 13-10 UNREINFORCED VESSELS HAVING AN OBROUND CROSS SECTION. The value of stress I obtained was high. I checked all the calculations and have doubts about two things: [ol 1] The value of Moment of Inertia, which is bt^3/12. Neutral axis to Extreme distance (c). I used this...

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

Hi TGS4, I wanted to know about the procedure of distinguishing between Primary and Secondary Stresses in Structural Components. ASME Section VIII Div 2 Part 5 has Stress Classification in Table 5.6 to distinguish between Primary and Secondary stress for Heads, Shells, and Nozzles. How can we...

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

IdanPV, Thank You for the Suggestion.

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

Hi IdanPV, There is no direct contact between Shells and Lugs. Both are bonded contact to the welds.

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

Hi IdanPV, I have made bonded contact of weld with both Shell and the Lug.

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

Hi Fraccionadora, ASME Section VIII Div 2 Part 5 has Stress Classification in Table 5.6 to distinguish between Primary and Secondary stress for Heads, Shells, and Nozzles. How can we distinguish Primary and Secondary stress for Structural components? Also, For Structural Components which...

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

Hi codyk, The Shell, Weld and lug are different body so the mesh nodes doesn't coincide.

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

Hi r6155, The Structure itself is not continuously attached to the shell. There is a gap for a half pipe jacket.

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

Hi Fraccionadora, Thank you for your response. From your reply what I understood is, If we classify the stress as Secondary stress then the failure mode will be switched to Ratcheting. And also the Local failure and buckling have to be checked. In my case, where I am doing failure from Plastic...

Support Lug FEA as per ASME Div 2 Part 5.

I did support lug FEA as per ASME Section VIII Div-2, Part 5, Elastic Stress Analysis Method (5.2.2). The model in analysis consists of Support Lug Assembly, Heads, Shell and fillet weld between Support Lug and Shell. The material properties of Shell and Support Lugs are as follows: Allowable...

The stress on F&D head is extremely high in ANSYS Workbench as compared to ASME VIII Div-1.

Issue: The stress on F&D head is extremely high in ANSYS Workbench as compared to ASME VIII Div-1 calculation. Vessel OD: 96”, 106” Seam-Seam Thickness: 0.4375” Pressure: 105 psi Material: SA-24 316L. The baseplate of Leg as fixed. I did ANSYS analysis for F&D (ASME 80:10) head. The obtained...
