    Guideline required for MFAC relay

Yes the MFAC. The manual for the MFAC talks about a stabilizing resistor and the standard sizes available but no literature on how to size it. Do you have any material you can share?

    Guideline required for MFAC relay

Hello Can anyone provide any guidance or reference material for how to correctly size (if required) the stabilizing resistor that comes with the high impedance MFAC relay in bus differential applications? I have looked everywhere and cannot find anything.

Geotec report - thermal resistivity with dry out curve

Thanks for the response, my question was around which thermal resistivity to choose for the report. I understand how to derate the cables based on soil thermal resistivity.

Geotec report - thermal resistivity with dry out curve

Hello I am trying to calculate ampacity rating of direct buried cables. The thermal resistivity used significantly impacts the rating of these cables. I have a report where they have performed a thermal resistivity test of the soil. It appears as if they have put the soil in an oven (or...

    Angle lintel above window

Thanks for the responses. I will re-visit the calculation, however my question is whatever the deflection is, 5mm, 10mm or 15mm, should there be a gap between the lintel and the window to account for this deflection? Otherwise the beam will put pressure on the window and potentially cause it to...

    Angle lintel above window

Apologies, I rectified the thread title. Cross section is attached in the link below https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tNjgbqf6JvCWvycKxb-ltcGlahzQKO9_/view?usp=sharing Calculation is also attached in the link below...

    Angle lintel above window

Hello I have to install some large steel angle lintels above some 5-6m wide commercial style windows. They are going to be installed in a brick veneer wall. Due to width the lintels have to be welded to PFC beams (which are located in the timber wall cavity supported by SHS posts either...

    Load bearing walls - explanation

Thanks for the replies. There's an internal wall of a robe above it which is also not load bearing. So in other words it wouldn't make much sense to be spending money on a joist above that wall, the wall can just be packed up to carry the upstairs load?

    Load bearing walls - explanation

Hello I have two walls with floor joists running between them (refer attached diagram, walls 1 and 2). One of the joists runs between the two walls (i.e. walls 1 and 2) and ontop of another wall (parallel to the joist, i.e. wall 3). Diagram: I've been assured by a structural engineer that...

Sizing a structural beam - calculation

Thanks for the replies. The joists themselves have been engineered to carry this load. I'm just looking at the support for the unit itself.

Sizing a structural beam - calculation

Hello I am trying to calculate the size of some structural beams. Each beam will be supported on one side by a timber stud and on the other hung vertically with timber from timber joists. I have a box with UDL of 85kg/m (or 0.84kn/m). Box dimensions are 1.4m (L) x 1m (W) x 0.5m (H). My span...

Beam to stud connection detail (typical)

Thanks for the response. A U-shaped bracket won't work, as I can only bolt to the hardwood studs on one side. It will interfere with plaster on the other side. It would have to be an L-shaped bracket, but then it's lifting the height of the beam which I don't want to do (currently my window...

Beam to stud connection detail (typical)

I believe the PFC is hot formed not cold formed. The studs are just hardwood studs. I was thinking of welding a plate onto the back of the PFC (say half way up) with a 6mm CFW, then punching some holes in the plate and screwing that into the front of the studs.

Beam to stud connection detail (typical)

Sorry - yes this is Australia. Here's my attempt at a sketch! https://drive.google.com/file/d/14Z3sUJWjet5gk3ZWQ5o4BByXFLLdhvIU/view?usp=sharing I'll be welding either a flat plate or UA angle to the opposite side of the beam to support brick work. The view is from internal.

Beam to stud connection detail (typical)

Hello I have a 250x90PFC and a 300x90PFC that will be supported by 3x90x45 F17 KDHW tripple studs either side. The beams are used on brick veneer walls in a residential home to support upstairs internal framing and bricks. A 200mm flat plate will be welded underneath the beams which will...

    Cleating PFC beams onto columns

Hello I have two 90x90 square hollow section columns. I need to cleat a 300x90 PFC beam between the columns, however I need the flanges of the PFC to be flush with the column face. This means it's impossible for me to cleat the PFC to the centre of the column. I need to offset the cleat...

    Curious about structural calculation

Hello Just curious, can someone tell me what the paramaters "Centres (CTS)" and "Design At" for this steel floor beam? I'm trying my hand at some structural engineering and just need a basic explanation. Link to calc...

Grout under base plates - residential house

Thanks for the responses. I'm really reluctant to grout. If the slab is not perfectly smooth meaning the column may be out of plumb, can I shim underneath it? I can see in the engineers comps, total dead load = 2.9kPA and total live load = 1.5kPA. This would equate to a total load of 4.4kPA...

Grout under base plates - residential house

Hello I have some 270mm (W) x 90mm (L) 10mm (thick) base plates welded onto some SHS columns which will be used to support the upper storey of my house. The slab has been poured a month ago. Upper storey is tin roof with light weight foam board/render on the external walls. The engineer has...

    Surge arrestor and EPR

Hello I am trying to understand the inner workings of surge arrestors. If a surge arrestor diverts current to ground once line voltage is above a certain threshold, does that mean you will get an earth potential rise at the surge arrestor output? For example, if I measured the voltage between...
