Closet cooling and fan static pressure

I tried 3 types of fans. The original were mains 240v fans. Then I tried another more expensive set of 240v fans. They were both as loud as each other which signified to me that mains 240v fans were too loud for this application (due to motor noise) The 12vdc ones were much quieter which were...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Yep 4 fans extracting. They pretty much run most of the day where as the original ones would run for about 20 mins every hour (both setups were/are under thermostat control). But I don’t mind, these things are so quiet I’m happy to let them run 24/7 if need be.

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Ok so I have found the issue. After replacing the fans with the Noctua fans, it runs very quiet now whilst still cooling the space down (no need for holes etc.). I still haven't had a hot day yet, so waiting for that. But I seem to be able to get ambient temps inside the closet to within 2deg...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Yeah a poor guess on my part. I went and measured it. Getting around 150W at the moment. Ok I see your point and appreciate the feedback, but the likelyhood of a PC or an NVR catching fire is extremely low. I am not running a data center here lol. I have been in the electrical and construction...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Not where I live, I built the house, it's not a fire break. Fire breaks are only between different dwellings. That is a good point, however supplying cooled air from my HVAC unit would cost an absolute fortune as there would be no zoning setup. The house is quite large, I have two separate HVAC...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Thanks for the suggestion, I will either try this or cutting two holes in the floor and venting cool air from the floor below (probably a neater solution tbh). I've also ordered the Noctua fans suggested by Snickster - so let's see if these are quieter!

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Yeah apologies I should've posted the photos and video earlier, just been very busy this past week. You are correct, the inlet air flow availability is poor. I don't have a load of equipment in there, I have the following: 1. PC that runs barely above idle 2. Dahua NVR (cameras) 3. Modem...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Ok so I tried those more expensive fans, what total rubbish. Louder than the ones I have. Real shame, Vent-axia are supposed to be the world leaders in fan manufacturing (from what I've heard). I was really hoping that would fix the issue. Never the less - back to the drawing board. I have...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

I like your thinking. However, this is how the install already is! The fans are mounted inside the closet. They extract air from inside (via the 1" gap) and blow outside towards the open room. If I put fan covers on the outside of the closet that are visible from the room, I'll be sleeping on...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Thank you I will have a read of this No - the fans are mounted to the drywall above the doors. It is not vibration. The fans are screwed into the wall and I have put pressure on the fans with my hands. No change in sound, the hum is from the motors (I'm sure of it!) Yep poor design, but I...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Thanks for the response. I tried the speed controller and that did nothing for noise reduction. I can definitely say it’s the motor hum that drives me mad. 😡 I’ve come to the conclusion that I probably need better quality fans. I had another look tonight and The Noctua ones won’t work as...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Thanks for the reply, this is great information. What if instead of going the nuclear option of replacing the fans (quite the job!), I slowed the existing ones down by say 30 or 50% at night? I know this will make a difference to the motor noise, but is there a correlation between m3/h and fan...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

I don't have a dB meter, but yes you're probably right. They turn on for 10-15 mins then turn off, once every couple of hours. It depends on ambient temperature etc. I found that with one fan, it would be on for an hour to achieve the same internal ambient. I haven't done a heat load...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Thanks for the reply - I understand it's 36dB when added up, but looking to get it lower if possible. I have used soundscreen insulation batts (or insulwool) to insulate around the fans. No there is no attic space, it is a flat roof home. No access to roof space otherwise I would've done...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

I inspect the fans once every 6 months for dust. I can tell you there's no dust. Filters would just add unnecessary airflow resistance in this situation I feel.

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Thanks for the reply. I don't think PC cooling fans will have enough power to draw air in. Flow vs Static pressure curves for PC cooling fans is pretty poor from what I have read? Exhausting to the roof and hence atmosphere isn't a good idea where I live. The cabinet exhausts to a room that is...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Thanks for the replies! I have attached a sketch which hopefully paints a better picture of the install. Unfortunately this is not an option. My wife will shoot me :( I have attached a diagram to this post which hopefully clears this up. Cooler air is being drawn through the gaps in the...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Thanks for the reply. It’s all of my server equipment. It’s a closet in the home, not in my bedroom. Because of the enclosed space heat eventually dissipates within the closet and it gets to 6 degrees above ambient. Ambient temp can get up to 28deg. I would love to have a bigger area for...

Closet cooling and fan static pressure

Hello I have a closet which is approx 2.7m high by 1m deep by 1.2m wide. I have l equipment in there that needs to sit at max 30degC. There are two double doors on the closet. In order to keep it at 30degC I’ve installed 4 extraction fans on a thermostat. The fans draw air in through gaps in...

    Guideline required for MFAC relay

Yes the MFAC. The manual for the MFAC talks about a stabilizing resistor and the standard sizes available but no literature on how to size it. Do you have any material you can share?
