...it's ok, don't all rush at once - have found the solution.... :~)
[by changing the name at the top of the spec tree of the NEW part to the name I want, (RMB, and select properties) and then saving the new part "normally" - so then, do not have to use 'save as' to give the new file...
...I create a new part (eg Part51), save it under a new name, relevant to it's part number.
...when I insert it into an assembly, the part name comes up as Part51, not the new name? why is this?
...so I have to rename it in the assy, even though it knows it is linked to that part under it's...
...has anyone else spotted this, or am I missing something?
It's a facility in V4, whereby I can choose a surface and an (appropriate) plane and create a solid between the two, in the normal direction of the plane. But, I can't see an icon for it in V5!!
I can, of course, get around this, by...
Thanks Eric!
I'm not sure I understand the 2nd part of your reply, about keeping a 'link' - could you expand on the meaning of this; what it does; and on the reasons why this woud be useful?

...in CADDS5 I could View-Part; in Catia4 I can activate a part passively and/or use sessions - how to do the same in V5, so that I can 'interact' with an existing part, reference only, such that any info from intersections with or extractions from it, are 'kept' in the 'current/new' part...
...also, all the 'ends' of the open surface(s) will need to be co-planar...
...(which, if it's a box, they will be, but then, why would you do it that way... :^ )
...(ie, the 'solidising' function ['close feature'] won't smooth a 'free-form patch' thro non-coplanar ends of [joined] surfaces, -...
It's something I'm looking into also - being used to layers on CADDS5 and Catia4.
But, I'm not sure if it's something 'they' really want to bother with. I say that because the documentation on it is not very clear/useful (it seems!)
There is a 'box' in the 'graphics' toolbar for naming and...
