Flex connector needed for gas connection to suspended make-up air unit?

I have a project with a suspended make-up air unit. The gas connection is steel-piped. The manufacturer doesn't show flex connection, but they also cover curb-mounted etc. A mechanic pointed out the unit will vibrate and may sway a bit and requested there to be a flex connection. Is this...

Return fan of a large AHU

Do you have a schematic? A fan is agnostic to what it does - it moves air and creates pressures. There is no exhaust or return fan. A fan can be used for both and what it does is based on location in the system. Some designs combine return and exhaust and control with dampers. Some use...

IMC vs IRC Scope (Garage Related)

I would use the terms the code uses and not interchange words. A garage and shop are different things and are treated differently in codes. I hope you communicated that clearly to AHJ. Their response likely was based only on the information you gave them. When I classify a space, I use exactly...

IMC vs IRC Scope (Garage Related)

Only what AHJ says matters. What we believe is meaningless. You should clarify what "shop" exactly means. What will the owner do in there besides storing cars? And will that just for themselves, or for others? What it is labelled as is meaningless if they end up doing other things. If they...

How to classify flammable liquids and derive the hazard category?

I'm determining hazard categories. There are some rooms that store combustible liquids. For example gasoline in plastic cans. There are others, but let's start with gasoline for now. Gasoline is a Class 1B liquid and I assume I can find out for the other liquids what they are. there may be...

Starting a single member engineering firm

It is between you and that firm how much you do. But normally a firm that has a PE and insurance etc., would perform more design and be responsible for that. that is why you have the license and insurance and charge the high rate. if you just do drafting work, you could just be an hourly...

    MS MechE with Math Bachelors

You never know what you need later in life. Even if a job doesn't require a PE license, such license sets yo apart from candidates without license. if nothing else, it proves you are able to pass two 8-hour tests, have 4+ years experience and found licensed people giving you a reference. This...

Starting a single member engineering firm

So you would literally supervise or self-perform those designs? if not, it would be rubber-stamping. I find it hard to believe you can actually supervise someone else's employees if you are just hired as a sub-consultant. So you really would have to perform the design yourself. You also...

    MS MechE with Math Bachelors

Forget about "equivalent ". You want ABET accredited or nothing. What if you jurisdiction change the requirement tomorrow to require actual ABET? What if you move to a different State in 5 years and then have to meet their requirements? I have a foreign undergraduate degree and a US ME. But...

Starting a single member engineering firm

First, check with your main employer what they allow. How someone hires you and for what work is between them and you. Obviously someone will be liable and responsible for the work. Are you implying you have a license and would stamp their design, or you want to design and them to stamp...

    Non- Refrigerated Body Storage Temperatures?

You should research some industry-specific sources. There likely are associations, magazines etc. This topic likely is too specific for Google to solve it all. Also check your local code and AHJ. When ASHRAE says "short-term" is fine for normal room temperature, they likely don't mean a...

    PICV for HVAC system

interesting. In the old day si used Honeywell PICV and they didn't publish the flow/pressure data. they stated those ports are not for flow measurement. I don't know how that is today. Anyway, it isn't clear what P the 2 ports are and where to get the third measurement. Maybe look at a...

    PICV for HVAC system

What are you trying to accomplish? Those pressures are NOT for measuring flow. At best they confirm flow, but not how much flow. You should review the manual or contact their support for specifics of THERIR valves.

Commercial kitchen hood and 1 hr rating

You also need a RATED connection of ceiling and hood. if there isn't an off-the-shelf solution, you can ask a fire protection manufacturer (like Hilti) to create an EJ (engineering judgment with details). If they can't have them do that, you are out of luck if you want to be legal. YOU cannot...

Inquiry Regarding Career Opportunities in HVAC Design

If you just work for a company as an employee under their supervision, you can start with whatever they require. They would have a senior engineer supervising and stamping the design. If you do design on your own, you need a license (PE etc.) depending on what your locale requires. But that...

Diffuser Layout for High Ceiling Applications

if you want to heat and cool adequately in high ceiling, diffusers aren't ideal. It depends on your discharge air temperature. Or more specifically, the dT to room temperature. if you discharge at 100F in a 60F space, this won't work well. Much more information required.

Fan Curve for ECM Blower Motor

Plot in standard way with flow on X-axis. That is how all other fan curves plot. Second, have one curve for each rpm. Each curve is for the SAME rpm. Looks like you are mixing different rpm. Looks like that motor has some sort of control to keep SP fixed until it runs out of capacity. it...

How to estimate heat load for machinery

the energy that goes into the equipment, also turns into heat. for example, if you operate a drill, all the mechanical energy becomes heat and the drill bit has to get cooled. Plus whatever bearing friction and other losses. so, if that all is in the same space (motor, and the connected tool...

    Drum Hood Vent Flow Design

Could they add a lid with hole they can reach through? Is closing the lid between filling an option? Sounds like this is a material you want zero contamination. Doesn't sound like something you want to have open. what about when the exhaust system fails or needs to be maintained? For that type...

How to estimate heat load for machinery

Tell more what is going on. Machinery typically only produces sensible cooling load, not latent (humidity). And your humidity requirement is a minimum requirement. If there is no maximum requirement, you don't need to dehumidify (except for humans).
