Is it worth buying the NFBA - Post-Frame Building Design Manual, Second Edition?

I am trying to do a post-frame building design for the first time and currently using the NFBA post-frame building manual 1999 edition that I found online. I would prefer to use the more updated version (second edition) but it does not seem to be available for free so I was wondering if it is...

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

***Update Hi everyone, So I contacted the manufacturer and they said that flipping the beam is not recommended as that is not what it is designed for and they have never tested it that way. Our solution was to add a 0.5-inch thick steel plate on top of the plywood which is much stronger and can...

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

@tomfh yes that makes sense, I will try to see if I can figure out how to check that

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

@smoulder what do you mean span to the webs? Are you saying it would be good to insert a piece of wood between the flanges and nail it into the aluma beam web?

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

@IRS I will talk to my boss about that, thanks for the input!

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

@enable I saw your thread and my understanding of it is that it was fine for you to flip the beams as long as you braced the compression flange every 4', am I correct in that? Sorry, I am still new to the field so some of the terms confuse me.

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

@tomfh yes, that is what I am talking about. Could you elaborate more on the risks of it bending and falling over?

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

Yea I ran the numbers and because of the small contact area of the tires, the plywood technically fails which is why I would like to keep the span to about 5 inches. The tire contact area is 20 in wide x 10 in long which I referenced from AASHTO. We can't use a steel plate of that size it would...

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

@jjl317 I am proposing turning all the joists upside down to reduce the plywood span. Currently the shorter flange is on top but I want to flip the joist so the bottom flange is on top. This would decrease the plywood span as I don't feel comfortable with a 9 inch unsupported plywood span having...

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

@jkl317 Thanks for your input, will look to call them. What do mean another row of joists? There are 11 beams right now which are about 11-12 inch on center with a clear span of 9 inches with the 3.5 inches flange in top. If we flip the beams then there will be a clear span of about 7.5 inches...

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

Sorry I should be more clear in what I am talking about but your description is very close to what I am working on. I am using these aluminum beams from a company called HI-LITE. I have provided the specs for the 650 aluminum beam that I am using offered by them below. In the spec, they give the...

Can you flip an aluminum beam?

Are you allowed to flip an aluminum beam so that the bottom flange is at the top? I am currently designing a shoring platform that uses 650 aluminum beams. The top flange has a width of 3.5 inches and the bottom has a width of 4.8 inches. The beams have 1.5 inches of plywood on top (2 ply, 0.75...

What are some good references for connection design for a new EIT?

@bulb, sounds good thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!

What are some good references for connection design for a new EIT?

Thanks for the suggestions guys! @bulb I had looked at that before and asked my boss if he could sign me up, unfortunately, he hasn't responded yet.

What are some good references for connection design for a new EIT?

I recently posted about what types of software others here use for connection design and got many different responses. Many people said they still use hand calcs for connection design. To those people, I was wondering what are some good materials and places to look to start learning connection...

What type of software do you use for connection design?

Thanks for the responses guys, I will take a look at IdeaStatica since all of you guys recommended it. Risa is great but it is limited to the standard connections available in the CISC and AISC guidelines.

What type of software do you use for connection design?

I was wondering what other types of software there are in the industry that other structural engineers use for connection design (shear, moment, brace, etc.,). The company where I work uses RISA connections.

    Aluminum beam design

@drift, okay will talk to my boss about buying the new version. Thanks a lot!

    Aluminum beam design

@drift sorry, could you elaborate on what you mean by, "the actual section properties and effective sections properties are used to compare with the limiting stress"? Like are you saying there are section properties for the designated beam and you would compare them with the applied...

    Aluminum beam design

Hi, I am trying to design a scaffolding system that uses aluminum beams. I have a copy of the 2005 version of the aluminum design manual and in there, they specify to design a beam for bending you have to check the tension bending, compression bending, and shear bending. However, the final...
