Slab Over High Volume Change Potential Soil

There are some papers out there with correlations for estimating swell pressure using index properties, but I'm not sure how accurate they are. If it were me I don't think I would go that route. Agree with Stego1, swell test is going to be best practice. Personally I don't think it is a good...

Solutions to mitigate settlement (Total & Differential) caused by deep fills.

How much of the settlement is attributed to the fill mass itself, and how much to the natural subgrade? If the natural subgrade areas are accessible to construction equipment and there is money in the budget, you could try dynamic compaction. You would definitely eliminate the settlement in the...

    Residential SRW Design

As far as confirming in-situ bearing you could use a DCP (Dynamic Cone Penetrometer). That would give you a direct correlation with the Bearing Capacity. I don't think I would "design" a footing off the DCP results, but it is a good way to let you know if you are int the ballpark.

Field exploration elevation - how do you obtain it?

I usually use a combination of 2 or 3 apps on my iphone and compare the elevation results and see if they tend to merge. Then when I get back to the office look on Google Earth and/or USGS maps to see if I'm in the ballpark. The apps I use are called; GAIA GPS, My Altitude, and Altimeter+. They...

Rebound Associated with Swimming Pool Design in Over-Consolidated Fat Clay (CH)

I have a query, I am new here but I am a geotechnical engineer that has been practicing for near 30 years. I have historically not done many investigations for swimming pools, but it seems locally that I am getting more and more requests for either pre-construction investigations or forensic...
