I am working on a truss design for Highway bridge. I needed some help in lateral bracing of the compression chord. AASHTO 6.7.5.4 Trusses states "the member providing lateral bracing to compression chords should be as deep as practical and connected to both flanges." Can I use W12 member aligned...

thank you for the explaination.
"Simple span bridges do not have a "structure response" because there is nothing else to give the bridge a different period (like a column). "
Keeping this in mind, if in multispan bridges we releasae the movement in longitudinal direction for the...
Yes we do have to do a multi-modal analysis. However for preliminary analysis we are using uniform load method. Can anybody explain me the reason why we are not required to do any seismic analysis for single span bridge? AASHTO only requires to provide connection of superstructure to the...
SEISMIC ZONE 3.
Are you saying that we should design the abutment and piles for the lateral load even for single span bridge? If yes, how do I find the lateral load on the abutment when it clearly says no seismic analysis required? Please bare in mind that i am not asking this question with...
I am designing a multi-span steel composite beam with concrete deck. I have few questions on seismic design of piers/abutments in multi-span bridges.
Below is the bridge restraint information

Seems unlikely. The date on the drawings is 1928. The architectural section does not reveal anything (as usual). The building framing system is steel columns and beams and conrete pan joists for floor framing.
Does anybody know what does 6-H-24.1 stand for? I am checking capacity of an existing structure and came across this beam call-out which I could not find in the historical shapes excel sheet in AISC.
Thanks
I tried to analyze 7.24 version file in 9.0.4 and it gives me Analysis incomplete Due to error
COULD NOT ALLOCATE ARRAY NAME = Coor_rXyzALL
ALLOCATE ERROR # 165
Any idea what can I do?
I have a 26 story building in seismic zone 3. The main lateral system consist of 46'x46' interior concrete core with additional perimeter frame for 25% EQ loads. When I am modeling my shear walls with 4 corner supports, I am getting huge lateral forces even in DL or LL cases. Overall lateral...
Can anyone provide references on seismic connections of steel beams to concrete filled steel tubes? In particular "J-Bolt" type connections.
Thanks
Algorithm for 1997 UBC Seismic loads is based on Chapter 16, Section 1630.2 in ETABS. I was wondering if one has to check for loads based on Seciton 1630.1?
When designing flat slab with SAFE, I am getting high unbalanced moment on exterior columns (with edge beams). Should column design, which typically includes only gravity loading, include this unbalanced moment?

Will assigning it shell lead to high out-of-plane bending of the slab and hence reduction of total lateral deflection at top? I tried to model a typ. bldg. with both ways only for lateral loading. Results showed increase in deflection when slabs assigned membrane rather than shells.
