    Concentration of Picral

If I am adding 4 grams of picric acid to 100ml of ethanol, and the specific gravity of picric acid is 1.77, wouldn't the concentration of the resulting be 2.26%? All the handbooks and manuals I have found call this a 4% picral solution. What am I missing?

    Ac1 temperature calculation

This information comes from G. Krauss in Steels: Heat Treatment and Processing Principles (an excellent book). Krauss got the equations from KW Andrews, Empirical Formaulae for the Calculation of Some Transformation Temperatures, JISI, Vol 203, 1965, p721-727: Ac3=910 - 203(C)^.5 - 15.2Ni +...

    Ac1 temperature calculation

Does anyone have an equation to calculate the Ac1/Ac3 temperature for steel from its chemistry? I am more interested in the Ac1. Any information you have would be helpful. Thank you.

Mold fill when casting peritectic single phase alloys.

The mold fill problem is not due to the zero freezing range. For example, a eutectic composition will have a zero freezing range, and fills the mold all the time. Cast Iron is an example of this. Mold filling may be due to the lack of superheating. If your alloy is at 1 degree above the...
