Ring beams on tanks at cone to cylinder

Can someone please give me a website or other resource which provides details of typical ring beams on tanks at abrupt changes of shell slope? (ie at a cone to cylinder) I'm designing a tank with FEA and I can't get a good method of lowering shell stress at the ring beam Thanks, Richard Ellis

API 653 Repiar of Caustic Tank

Yes stress relieving is the way to go. If you can't stress relieve the weld get a welding engineer to write up a weld procedure that minimises residual stress. You will have to use small weld runs with low hydrogen low heat electrodes, so that each run tempers the previous run. Use a low yield...

    Strange crack in tank

The tank was designed to API 650 and contains hydrate slurry in sodium aluminate solution. It operates at 90 degrees C. The plate is unlined G250 steel, 30 yrs old, 25mm thick. There is minimal temperature fluctuations and minimal fluid flow. Fatigue is not expected. This is the first crack...

    Strange crack in tank

Can someone please help me out with this crack? I'd like to know a possible cause and suggested repairs. The crack is longitudinal and is beside a vertical weld in a 30m high 30 yr old precipitation tank. The crack is 3mm deep, and extends from 8mm to 78mm from the weld toe. The crack is in the...

Weld toe to toe distance requirements

I thought the weld distance specified is to keep away from HAZ. The problem is on our tank I'm not sure if we're cutting out all of the HAZ (or other effects) from the previous weld?? because we're only cutting 100mm away from it. Thanks, Richard

Weld toe to toe distance requirements

In API 650 and 653 the minimum weld toe to toe requirement is 250mm. We would like to cut out a 16mm butt weld on a 30 yr old grade 250 steel precipitation tank, and place a new weld only 100mm from where the old weld was. What factors are involved in this 250mm weld distance? We can test a...

Factors influencing weld toe to toe distance requirements

The tank was designed to API 650 and ASME section 8, it is grade 250 steel and the tank is 30 years old. Thanks in advance for replies

Factors influencing weld toe to toe distance requirements

Sorry, the tank was designed to API 650 and ASME section 8, it is grade 250 steel and the tank is 30 years old.

Factors influencing weld toe to toe distance requirements

We would like to cut out a 16mm butt weld on an existing precipitation tank shell, and place a new weld only approximately 100mm from where the old weld was. This is far less than that specified in API 650 (250mm). We can test a sample of the weld and plate around the HAZ; do we need to look...

    Air Discharge Stack - Design

I am designing a similar chimney. The 0.7m. due to vortex shedding occurs perpendicular to the wind direction, correct? Will vibration occur in the direction of the wind? I can't find anything in wind loading codes for this effect Thanks, Richard

    Calculating weld strength

How do you quickly calculate the strength of a weld in bending? For example a fillet weld on a large lug welded to a beam, where the load is parallel, in plane to the weld and offset. Methods I've researched either require a huge weld for the large force at the weld ends, or take a force 1/3...

How can I calculate friction heat gain?

I need to know an estimate of the temperature increase due to friction of chilled water (5 degrees C) over a 400m. long 300mm diam PE pipe. The mass flow rate is 190kg/m^3. I have worked on this at the office but cannot find any information on this. I hope someone can help me out. Sincerely...
