I have got the required symbols onto the drawings using mtext (as described above).
It is a shame that there is no way of inserting the symbols into dtext, as the text strings on the old drawings I am updating generally contain dtext only.

I seem to remember that to get a centreline symbol in the old version of autocad that I used to use - using text style Romans, it was %%174. This now gives me a ?.

It turned out that the font I was using could not be obliqued. I used MTEXT, and set the angle in the STYLE window, and this worked a treat. Thanks again.
admiralken, thanks for the response, I tried this but it came back with the same error. It errors when any angle in excess of 150deg is put in.
I am sure that in previous versions of acad it accepted both 330 and -30?
