    MTBF Startup Failures

I would like feedback on the subject matter of MTBF. Do you account for failures related to startup when calculating MTBF?

    PWHT of Monel 400

Can anyone give me any insight into the Brinell Hardness requirements for Monel 400 after PWHT for pipe? Is it in the range of 160-185 BHN? I also can not find any information regarding at what hardness levels does Monel 400 become susceptible to cracking. I have seen some documentation...

    Inspecting stormwater sumps

stormwater containment sump would be a below grade, reinforced concrete sump with a submersible pump used to pump out stormwater. Typcal dimensions are 10ft wide by 10 ft deep.

    SA-182 F316L and F316

Can anyone explain why the allowable stresses for F316 are higher than F316L in SA-182? It appears that above 850'F, 316L is not suitable wheras 316 has allowable stress up to 1500'F.Other than the low carbon content in the L grade, I see no difference in the composition.

    Coppercoat in HF Alklations units

I've seen that a copper based thread lubricant is not recommended for use in HF alkylation units, rather a Nickel base anti seize compound is recommended. Why is that? I've heard that for marine applications to prevent a galvanic cell from forming but not HF units. Thanks

    Causes of pump casing damage??

I agree....it appears to be corrosion/errosion.You may also want to consider a protective coating such as Belzona. http://www.belzona.com

    API versus ANSI centrifugal pump

The API standard is the most comprehensive engineering document with regards to safety and pump reliability. It was designed specifically for refinery applications whereas ANSI was developed for the chemical industry. The attention given to design detail(nozzle loading,torsional/lateral...

Boron Coating on Centrifugal Slurry Pump

I have experience with Boron diffusion. If I understand the process correctly, it's not really a coating becuase the the boron actually diffuses into the metal(approx. 80 mils)rather than puddling on top of it. We modifies our FCC slurry pumps in 2000 by using this process on the wetted parts.We...

    Reformer Compressor Fouling

We have a Delaval barrel type Recycle Gas compressor in our Reformer unit.Periodically the compressor becomes fouled with ammonia chlorides, which produces high rotor unbalance vibrations.Consequently, we have to take the compressor out of service and purge it to the atmosphere.By purging I...

    mechanical seal substitution

Depends....If the failed seal has no history of reliability problems the vendor is sending that seal to the manufacturer for repairs and shipping back to us(this is rare). If the seal is flagged as a "bad actor" or something is identified with the design that needs improvement they are converting...

    mechanical seal substitution

I work in an oil refiney and lasy year we adopted a fix fee program for our mechanical seals. The vendor that we selected previously had maybe 5% percent of the seal population.Seal conversion is a simple task for the vendor, especially if they have detailed drawings. If no drawings are available...

Selection of Mechanical seals as per API 610

I wouls also recommend reading API 682, which is a standard that covers mechanical seals for pumps in use in the petroleum refinery industry, ie API 610 pumps.
