Thanks for the info. Adding a column would be costly and, if possible, I'd like to add stiffeners to distribute the load to reduce the localized stress below the critical stress. It seems that API and ASME might have design guides / codes that could help.
Thanks again.
Does anyone know of any good design resources for large (100' ID) steel storage tanks? I need to bear a truss bent on the outer ring of an existing tank and am looking for some guidance.
Any assistance is appreciated.
Does anyone know what yield and ultimate strengths the steel with designation A283C is? Is there anything else I need to know about this steel plate material?
Thanks.
Is the 1997 UBC still the governing building code in the state of California?
Does anyone know if any local jurisdictions have (or are permitted to) adopt a different code?
I have heard rumblings that California may adopt an IBC code in the future. Does anyone know the status of this?
I noticed the Heckmann products, too. I discussed this with a Hohmann and Barnard Rep. - they can do the same thing. Basically, they manufacture most of their anchors out of a metal with a lower melting point than steel. My question is - how do you guarantee the anchor will get to this...
I found this page - interesting info. on firewalls, but nothing on "break-away" bolts. Neither does Hilti. Any info. anyone has on such an assembly would be extremely appreciated. The link to the page is:

Thanks for the info. The reason we can't have two separate bearing walls is that the architects have a problem with doors in both walls - this creates an ingress/egress problem. The middle wall will be the separation and have the doors.
The reason the middle separation wall would be exposed...
We have a project that includes a fire separation wall. As per architects, the wall construction is this: Each side of the wall must be designed as two separate structures. This is not a problem. The issue is that there is a large bank of doors in this wall. Therefore, a third separation...
What is entailed in AISC Certification and how important do you feel it is? We have a project out for bid where the steel fabricator is to be AISC Certified, and many fabricators are crying foul because they aren't. Any assistance would be helpful
Does anyone know of any publications giving some history to the current steel girder splice design provisions in AASHTO (section 10.18)?
Either AASHTO publications or from some other source, has anyone found such a work?
WHAT IS THE GENERAL OPINION ON MASONRY CONTROL JOINTS - ARE THEY REQUIRED FOR INTERIOR WALLS NOT EXPOSED TO WEATHER (EXCEPT DURING CONSTRUCTION)? IF REQUIRED, DO THE GENERAL SPACING REQUIREMENTS (25'-30') STILL GOVERN OR CAN THIS BE LENGTHENED? ANY ASSISTANCE IS APPRECIATED.
BOCA table 2107.1 and IBC table 2109.4.1 give masonry wall lateral support requirements. The codes read that this support can be supplied by cross walls, pilasters, etc. but give no sizing requirements for said support. Especially pilasters, does anyone have a published reference that...
Thanks all for the help. I know the bldg dept is the best source, but no one was available at the time and I wanted to be certain 24" was safe. thanks a 10^6!
Thanks a 10^6- In the 1999 version, the new section is 2.1.8.6.1.1. There is a handy-dandy ref. chart referring 95 version sections to appropriate 99 sections (it is in the back of the 99 version).
thanks again
I cannot find information on several items concerning stucco.
1. What is a typical unit weight for stucco? Is it the same as for concrete?
2. How thick is stucco usually placed? Is 7/8" thick out of the ordinary?
3. Is there a limiting deflection for headers that support stucco...
