If the property is set to document name you cannot change that value : it is going to be what it just says, the document name.

PartDoc.SetMaterialPropertyName(database, name) is obsolete in Sw2005 SP0.1
Use PartDoc.SetMaterialPropertyName2( configName, database, name). This might solve your 1rst problem.

I have also evaluated REVIT : very nice tool. But no API.
