Allowable bending stress in AREMA manual

Can anyone tell me what is the allowable bending stress in AREMA design manual? I just ordered the manual online, but have to wait for 3 to 4 days to receive it. I don't want to sit and waste my time and hopefully want to do some prelimnary calcs between now and then (I heard somebody saying it...

Factor of Safety on Laterally Loaded Pile Analysis

BigH - Sorry for double posting. Posting in here was my mistake. I was trying to get rid of this posting after another posting was on Foundation Engineering, but didn't find how to delete it. If anyone knows how to delete a posting, please let me know and I will delete it right then. Thanks!

Factor of Safety on Laterally Loaded Pile Analysis

In analyzing laterally loaded piles, how does F.S. is applied in the design? Is F.S. applied to k value in input data for P-y analysis (e.g. LPILE) or to output values (e.g. Moment or Deflection)? In addition, how much F.S. is generally used for the analysis? Thanks!

Two distinctive materials behind anchored soldier pile wall

I do understand what you are talking about. However, my point is that what elements (either rock bolts or soil nails) are used at rock face, unless those are pre-loaded somehow, it is almost impossible to prevent H-pile section from being negatively influenced by bending. If so, how we can...

Two distinctive materials behind anchored soldier pile wall

Thanks for all the comments! As PEinc said, we don't have the luxury to have 3 ft of rock bench along the wall. If we did, this could have been a lot easier to work with. Basically the wall needs to be plumb from top to bottom. So, I am thinking to drill down and have soldier pile socketed about...

Two distinctive materials behind anchored soldier pile wall

fattdad and InDepth, thanks for your comments Since there are significant utility issues in upper 10 feet of the wall, DOT actually requires anchored soldier pile wall. So, soil nailing for the entire wall height is not an option for this project. Originally I have thought about the same thing...

Two distinctive materials behind anchored soldier pile wall

Wouldn't the friction angle of 30 degree for full depth be too conservative? As I mentioned above, the quality of the rock is excellent (RQD value is 90~100). The upper silt layer actually has some sand in it and was classified as ML or SM depending on boring locations. I do understand the...

Two distinctive materials behind anchored soldier pile wall

I am designing anchored soldier pile walls for State DOT. Their boring logs show two very distictive materials behind the wall location. Mostly 18 feet of silt (N=10+/-) is sitting on hard granite type of fresh rock. The height of the wall is about 35 feet and I am trying to use FHWA design...

    Anchor Bearing Plate Thickness

The closest model I found was case 2k (outer edge free, inner edge simply supported). In my case, anchor is installed through pipe lookout welded in h-pile and 7 strand anchor head bears on the steel plate sitting on pipe lookout.

90 degree inside corner soldier pile configuration

I want to know in normal practice how other engineers configure inside and outside corner piles requiring anchors? For outside corner pile, in order to eliminate use of anchors for the pile I normally use a number of straps using 4x1/2 steel bar welded on flanges of adjacent h-piles each...

    Anchor Bearing Plate Thickness

That was what I was thinking, too. As born2drill suggested, I will stick with the number originally come up with. Thanks!

    Anchor Bearing Plate Thickness

I am currently working on designing a size of anchor bearing plate for 45 ft. high anchored soldier pile wall and want to get your advice on it. Initially I simply tried with a simple beam model to design the thickness of the plate, but after finishing the calcs I thought that the number I came...

Plate thickness for headed stud connection

Thanks for all the comments. Sorry for not describing my problem very cleary. Yesterday I didn't have enough time to describe my problem in detail. The steel plate with 4 headed studs will be fully embedded in 24" thick reinforced concrete wall. the distance from the head of the studs to the...

Plate thickness for headed stud connection

Hi, I am working on designing a simple tension connection using 4 headed studs (3/4 x 3-1/8, one on each quadrant) welded on 6 x 6 steel plate and have a question regarding the plate thickness. This connection including the plate will be fully embeded in concrete wall and a steel rod (#10...

    Soldier Pile Wall Design Software

Has anyone heard about "SupportIT" by GTSoft? I am looking for a design software for soldier pile wall with multi rows of anchors. Additionally I want to input multi layers of soils behind the wall. It seems to me that SupportIT does all that I need and prior to making my final decision I want...
