    Power Surge Protector 220V-60A

All: Thanks for your replies. Further info: The washing machine has been replaced with analog type. The damaged oven heating elements were OK, no flashing lights, and there was 120V power to the circuit boards. There was no apparent lightning at the time...there much wind which...

    Power Surge Protector 220V-60A

All: I need to build/buy a power surge protector for a 220V-60A Double Oven. Or, Plan B, something inside the oven to protect the control/display circuit boards at a lower voltage/current rating. Background: My elderly mother lives alone in rural area prone to power failures. The last one...

Replacing odd-ball sized bearings from 1989.

If you can find a bearing with equivalent load bearing capacity, machine a sleeve to to fit the housing. This would be much better than machining the housing and losing rigidity. Use Loctite on the sleeve depending on the housing material. The more you know, the more you know you don't know....

Relationship between aluminum hardness and strength?

Gentlemen: Is there a useful relationship between the hardness of an aluminum alloy and its tensile strength? Is there a general rule of thumb that can be applied? If so, does this relationship apply only within an alloy series or across some or all series? Thanks.... Terry The more you...

    Brushed DC Motor w/PWM Control

Gentlemen: This is not my field, but I have had to pick up some of the load.... I have a brushed DC gearmotor, 300 in-lb torque, with output of 8 RPM. If the speed is reduced thru a PWM controler to 1 RPM, will there be any torque left for the load? Any guess as to how much? Thanks in...

What is the power/torque lost through a u-joint?

Gentlemen: Thank you all for your valuable input. For those still interested I found a source who has an empirically based formula. To= Torque Out Ti= Torque in a= Operating angle of U-Joint To= Ti*cos^2 a Also suggested for reference was an SAE publication " U-Joint and Driveshaft...

What is the power/torque lost through a u-joint?

Gentlemen: I have been through 20+ of my engineering books and a web search and I cannot find anything regarding torque or power loss through a u-joint. Also, I am trying to calculate the radial load for a bearing adjacent to the u-joint. Can anyone direct me to a source of info or provide...

How to Tell 400 Series SST from CRS?

Gentlemen: Thanks for the tips. I will order some CuSO4 and Nitric Acid for testing. I have a number of bars which could be 1030, 1045, 416, or 430, based on receiving records. The sawman cut off the color codes.... Thanks again...

How to Tell 400 Series SST from CRS?

Gentlemen: Is there a simple, shop based, test that can be used to distinguish martinsitic SST (400 series) from CRS/Drill Rod? Hopefully something on the order of grinding wheel sparks, etc... Thanks The more you know, the more you know you don't know....

    Big Dig Boston ceiling collapse

Gentlemen: This is not my field but what IS a tunnel ceiling? Why are "decorative" concrete panels suspended over a roadway, mounted by anchors/rods/grout all of which are loaded in tension? Why go to the effort of putting large concrete elements in a tunnel with no load bearing...

    Helicoils in Aluminium heads

I have done many VW heads with helicoils with much success. They are much better than the solid inserts. Use white grease on the tap, it will catch the chips and you don't have to pull the head or engine. The more you know, the more you know you don't know....

What is the best engineering advice you ever received?

Advice from my father (also an engineer) when I was considering careers: "There are two types of jobs in the world. There is the type where you take a shower before you go to work, and there is the type where you take a shower when you get home from work. You want the first kind...." TL...

Estimate Residual Welding Stress in Column Weld

Greetings Gentlemen: I hope you can point me in the right direction. I am trying to estimate the residual stress in a weld. I have a machine with a central column which is a 9 C 20.0 channel welded to a 1/2 in X 18 in SQ base plate. The base plate is welded to the end of the channel all...

Blown MOSFET on motor control board

VisiGoth: Thanks for your reply. All suggestions above seem to have validity. I (as an ME) would never attempt a new design or redesign, but I do want to effect a change. I am trying to convince the EE's and management that there are alternatives to smoking control boards which slows the...
