Blow Out "Plug" for jammed gun

Thanks unclesyd for your suggestions...I think Harwood may have a feasible solution for us, I'll look into them further.

effect of backlash on durability of straight gears

I agree with plasgears. Going to helical gears will provide better entry engagement & therefore less backlash.

Blow Out "Plug" for jammed gun

Did some research on rupture discs with the FIKE Co. and Continental Disc. Seems that the major application for these types of pressure relief devices are in the low pressure range. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they have anything that can handle 100ksi.

Blow Out "Plug" for jammed gun

Thank you guys for the advice. We are certainly sensitive to "events" in my field and therefore the gun is encased in an inch thick steel housing and fired remotely from a distance behind steel walls. I will put some thought into the idea of a blow out disc and bounce it off the other guys I...

Blow Out "Plug" for jammed gun

To ease your mind, the gun is an overdesigned, multi-barreled R&D gun that operates around 80ksi. Testing on a range. The problem arises because a switch was made from steel to combustible cartridges, and there is fear that the chamber would basically become a pressure vessel if the...

    Initial Conditions or Boundary Conditions?

Generally boundary conditions in a thermal analysis are used to prescribe temperatures at a surface. Therefore YOU control the surface's temperature. An initial condition on a surface is free to change throughout the analysis based on the environment you prescribe around it. I don't think you...

    stresses on bolts

Ahhh, good ol' femlab. Hmm, its been years since I've used that code and I'm not up-to-date with its capabilities. In ABAQUS you can specify that two surfaces be tied together without having to match the location of nodes on each part. Are you inputting nodal coordinates by hand? Perhaps...

    Initial Conditions or Boundary Conditions?

A boundary condition lasts the length of your analysis (or step), so if you are looking for transient effects, you will want to apply the 72F as an initial condition. Your heat source (with whatever heat conditions you choose, ie convection, radiation, or conduction) will then dictate...

    stresses on bolts

Apply BCs to the shell geometry to take advantage of the radial symmetry and use a tie connection between the shaft of the bolt and its associated "tapped" hole to simulate the threaded connection.

Blow Out "Plug" for jammed gun

I'm trying to design a blow-out plug for a gun to relieve chamber pressure if the projectile jams the gun barrel. I have thoroughly read the Machinery Handbook as well as other various materials and can't find a set of consistent equations for thread shear. This problem seems relatively...
