Florida Building Code (1/3 Masonry Stress Increase)

That's a good question STR04. Since 2000 IBC the 1/3 increase has been taken out unless the combined effect of two or more loads are added to the dead load, with exception to Chapter 23. Is this because masonry is so prevalent in Florida and they would take a hit by going to this provision?

Flexible Roof Diaphragm Over Multiple Supports

Thank you all for a consensus answer, but if a diaphragm is a deep beam with tension & compression chords why would you not assume that there would be some continuity across the support? I guess for simplicity and conservatism we use simply supported. A two span condition (equal span) would...

Flexible Roof Diaphragm Over Multiple Supports

All, How are most of you designing a roof diaphragm that spans across multiple supports (interior shear walls)? Should I look at each span as simply supported or as a continuous beam? If I analyze as a continuous beam is my chord force (M/B) calculated using the positive and/or negative...

    Getting Started in Tower Design

as tall as you'd like to design them... http://www.c-conceptsinc.com/ this is the most widely used commercial tower analysis software, hands down, base upon TIA-EIA & ASCE-7. Check out the demo version. I use to design for Crown Castle and this is the only software they accept. If you want...

Wood Species Spec. for Trusses in Hawaii

I'm working on a project on the main land of Hawaii as the EOR where engineered wood roof trusses are being used. What species would anyone recommend using in this region? Might I consider them being shipped from the west coast or use native material. TIA, msp

    Tilt-Up Connection for Expansive Soils

How would someone hand the connection at the base for a tilt-up wall panel system for an expansive soil condition that could possibly heave the floor system? Would you still connect the panel to the slab or primarily rely on a connection to the foundation or none of the above? TIA, mp
