Toyota Australia has offered every model here except corolla in diesel for at least fifteen years! I would expect only pugeot to have more passenger car diesels here than toyota.
Too much weight penalty having diesel hybrids, I'll bet hybrid car engineers would give their right arm for a spare...
It's not all about diaphram carby's either, many rotax ultralight aircraft engines are mounted inverted with Bing float carby's you just turn them over.
Some report poor starting from oiled plugs when the engine has been left a while, but no running problems or bearings.
