Hydrostatic testing of ASTs at low temperature

Thanks for the input. We will look at glycols. Brittle fracture was considered in selection of the steel. We are preparing for the possibility of a hydrotest at -20 deg F. We thought of using heaters but the cost will be prohibitive to try to account for thermal losses.

Hydrostatic testing of ASTs at low temperature

I am looking for chemicals that can be added to test water for a hydrostatic test of an aboveground storage tank at a temperature of -20 deg. F or thereabouts. I am looking for a vendor or a trade name. Desirable characterestics of the chemical are non corrosiveness and does not contaminate...

Repairs of #6 fuel oil tank

I would strongly suggest doing an API-653 inspection on the tank, prefarably internal. If welding is a problem, a bolted roof connecting to the structural members can probably work. A "Good" Inspection company might be able to help you with the issues.

    Retrofit Manway Into Concrete Tank

Considering the size of the manway you should be accomplish what you want to do, provided you provide extra reinforcing around the manway to compensate for the the penetration. Providing cutouts and openings is standard in the cast in place concrete industry and the extra reinforcement is akin...

Fire Damaged Warped Frame Steel Beams

This is from memory. API-579, a publication by the American Petroleum Institute has a chapter that deals with evaluation of fire damage. However, please note that the publication broadly covers fitness for service issues of pressure vessels and tanks and not structures per se. It might give...

Calculation of Allowable Piping Reactions at a Head Nozzle?

I have used BS5500 methodology in calculating the stresses in the past. IMHO, BS5500 is probably the easiest to use.

    steel protective coatings

This is from ASTM web site. I have recommended using this steel before for piling applications. Specification A588/A588M-01 Standard Specification for High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel with 50 ksi [345 MPa] Minimum Yield Point to 4-in. [100-mm] Thick Copyright 2001 AMERICAN SOCIETY...

    Corrosion Rate

Standard publications such as API-653 (for tanks), API 570 (Piping) and API-510 (Pressure Vessels) address issues of calculating corrosion rates based on inspection data if you are looking for those. They also address methods of inspection and evaluation of the inpsection data. There are also...

    Designing for differential settlements

I am working on a project which requires extensive modification in an existing historic building. The soil data indicates that the soil parameters are reasonable. However, most of the existing building is founded on pile foundations. I am firmly convinced that the vibrations due to piling...

    cocrete crude oil tanks design&construction

My two cents to the above list: Due to oil storage, the tank must be ensured to be leak free. Very hard to achieve with concrete. RKC

    Increasing Beam Capacity

Good resources for designing with welds are the books by Blodgett from Lincoln Electric. Design of weldments and Design of Welded structures. If the beam is an old shape, make sure that the weld type and procedure are compatible. I have used the WT method before with very good results. -RKC

Foam type sealer for underground tank

Definitely. If this I have a leaking tank, I would make sure that either the leak is fixed or it is repaired. However, my question still stands. Is any one aware of a product that is similar to a sealer such as stopleak?.

Tank sealer for a leaking tank

Are there any sealers that can flow like foam and seal leaks in an underground tank? Some think very similar to stop leak product used in radiators and such. Would very much appreciate it if some one can point a product or a site. Thanks -rkc
