    Pile cap reinforcement above pile

Our typical pile/pile cap detail calls for 6" of pile embedment and the bottom mat of rebar another 3" above that. This is based on minimum of 3" cover for concrete formed against and exposed to earth. We typically detail the pile reinforcement running up to the underside of the top mat with a...

Lack of Leader: Is it time to move on?

Our firm provides strictly engineering consulting and the branch offices are all separate but act under the supervision of the corporate office. I appreciate all of your comments. Thanks.

Lack of Leader: Is it time to move on?

Without a senior engineer to effectively market our brand of engineering, it seems like we are being left out of more and more projects...so essentially we are dying a slow death. The bad part is that one of my co-workers (one of the best designers I've met) even told the management that he was...

    Field bending of rebar

Yes, I was refering to ACI 318-7.3.2. I have researched this in several standards and know what they have to say...I just wanted to get some wisdom from the experienced engineers out there. Thanks for your input.

    Field bending of rebar

ACI 318 states that field bending of rebar is not permitted unless approved by the engineer. Research has shown that (cold) field bending a bar less than a #7 usually doesn't have any negative effects to the integrity of the bar. If there is no significant yielding, cracking, or, or kinking of...

    Definition of responsible chrage.

OK, here's one for all the PE's out there.....how exactly would you define "responsible charge"? Would simply reviewing the drawings for accuracy before signing them meet the criteria? Or does it mean periodic review of drawings and calcs at every stage of project development? Perhaps it's...

Lack of Leader: Is it time to move on?

(Sorry that this is so long...thanks in advance for hearing me out.) I work for a large multi-discipline engineering firm with several offices. For over a year, my department has been without a senior engineer/manager/leader to direct and grow our staff. As such, we have seen our projects...

    Structural masonry design handbook

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good masonry design handbook/textbook for structural engineers?

Curing of masonry walls prior to grout placement

Does anyone have a good rule of thumb for how long you need to wait for mortar to cure before CMU is grouted? I have found in PCA where they recommend 4 hours but can't seem to find any reference in ACI 530 or the governing building code. Any other suggested references or thoughts on this?

    Masonry screen wall

Does anyone have a good reference that would show a procedure for designing a cantilevered (unbraced/non-retaining) masonry screen wall? The only lateral load is transverse wind. No significant gravity or seismic loads.

Scouring concerns for project near coast

I have a project that is located close to the shoreline on a inland coastal bay (off of the Gulf of Mexico). The project is located well inland of the mean high water line. I cannot find any reference to the Coastal Construction Control Line that is typically referenced on coastal (Gulf front)...

    Metal Deck Fasteners

Does anyone know if there is a structural issue with button punching metal deck at the side laps? I had heard that it is not preferred (vs screws or welding) and decreases the integrity of the deck. Any comments appreciated. Thanks.

    Diaphragm Options

I have a simple rectangular building with roof system consisting of deep long span trusses. The building was originally designed with 1.5" steel deck as the roof diaphragm. The owner wants to delete the deck and go with a standing seam roof on purlins, so I'm trying to come up with other...
