    Modeling MAT Foundation

For detailed description consult J. E. Bowles "Foundation Analysis and Design" page 501. There, you will find a table for the range of K values. Use the average value for the specific soil condition applicable to you. Thanks for appreciation.

    Modeling MAT Foundation

dawn836, Your problem is different. fleisher misunderstood you. For your particular case, you should keep in mind, the way, value of "K" is obtained. It is obtained by plate load test (I rely on plate load test for larger jobs). Since the extent of PC is very finite, we can not consider it as a...

Guy Wires for a Stainless Steel Chimney

KarIT I would suggest you to modify the connection at guy wire support. To allow elongation, you can make a slot so that guy wire can adjust its length by sliding in the slot. During normal operation, when the temp. will be high, the guy support will shift closer to the chimney. But in shutdown...

Design factors in codes and a question on lifting

ThomasH, Now your question is more clear. Your concern is not lifting device design. You are concerned with the structure lifted. Generally building are not designed for such cases. But if client wants such design, it can be done. One can define lifting points and design lifting lugs. Then he...

Design factors in codes and a question on lifting

Thomas, For lifting device, you can follow ASME B30.20. Generally for lifting devices FOS is taken as 3. What do you mean by short very shot duration. Is it some type of Blast Load etc. If this is the case, the situation is different. Otherwise follow the recommended factors. See some text...

    Uplift on Column Anchor Bolt

I suggest you to get ASCE Report "Design of Anchor Bolts for Petrochemical Facilities". It suggests the way dowel bars are considered in design. Because Dowel bars are in the failure plane of concrete. ACI 318-02 does not address this issue.

Why the WTC Towers Fell - on PBS

Thanks Bbird for your response to my posting. I am a Pakistani and working in Osama's COUNTRY. I do agree with you that it is difficult to find a really knowledgeable structural engineer over here. In my opinion it is a technical forum and our discussion should be within the boundries defined by...

How reliable is Element Design inSTAAD?

Noopur, My experience is that there are bugs in element design. It seems that the steel ratio is minimum. Send me your input data file. Thanks,

    Design by rule of thumb

Hi Guys, I have a very important rule of thumb to design a foundation for vibrating machines. i.e. Weight of footing = 3 to 5 times weight of the machine.

    Rebar in mass concrete

Only min. reinforcement will not be sufficient. Pay attention to amount of heat of hydration, generated in the early age of concrete. This phenomenon is very important. As the heat generated is max. when the strength of concrete is min. Follow ACI 207 guide lines.
