    Leaving management

I am wondering if anyone else here has had the experience of leaving management and returning to an individual contributor role? I’ve been in management for the past few years, but if I’m honest with myself the stress and daily tasks leave me burned out and unsatisfied. I much more enjoy my...

    Welding Stellite 12

Is it possible to weld cast Stellite 12 to Inconel? The procedure we have received from our materials lab seems unreasonable. I haven't actually been able to find any information that this has been done successfully by anyone. Thanks, Kevin

New grad engineer - still unemployed!

Where in the province are you looking for work? I wouldn't limit my search to positions listed as entry level. Every job ad nowadays asks for 5 years experience, but they will look at anyone who is remotely qualified, since most of the experienced people have already been snapped up. Do some...

    Women Engineers....

In Canada it's a year off work for maternity leave. I have an employee now on mat leave, she has been gone for 10 months. Not a problem, just hired someone on a 1 year contract to replace her while she's off.

New grad engineer - still unemployed!

I'm in Alberta as well, it seems to me like you shouldn't have much problem finding a job, there are 100's of job postings. Where are you applying, I know people working in the oilsands who are desperate for warm bodies. In Alberta, unless you are looking at an academic career, getting a...

Would Heating an Aluminum Baseball Bat Make it hit Better

Having played ball for the past 20 years (baseball and now slowpitch), I can guarantee there is a difference in the distance a ball will be hit by an aluminum bat on a cold day vs. a warm day. I am in northern Canada so a cold day for ball is ~40°F and a warm day can be 90°F+. On the cold...

High Temperature Fatigue Analysis ASME Section VIII-2

I am trying to determine the allowable fatigue stress amplitude limits for thermowells at temperatures above those listed in the design fatigue curves. I am working with the ASME standard PTC 19.3 TW 2010, which has the fatigue stress amplitude limits listed for various materials, and which...

High Temperature Fatigue Analysis ASME Section VIII-2

Is there a way to do a fatigue analysis at temperatures above the limits of the Design Fatigue Curves in ASME Section VIII Div.2?

Cracking when welding carbon steel to stainless

The crack is occuring in the middle of the weld. We are definitely not preheating the joint very much, our current weld procedure doesn't call for it beyond the basic 70deg. Thanks for the advice, I'm going try a sample with a hefty dose of preheating to see how it reacts.

Cracking when welding carbon steel to stainless

Hi, I need some help! We are having issues with welding carbon steel parts to stainless steel parts. We are getting cracking of the weld, usually on the root pass. The carbon is generally A105 and and the stainless 304 or 316. It is a highly restrained full penetration bevel joint, and we...

Soon to have MCHE degree, moving to NYC, suggestions?

Paperclipfixesall, Why not start by contacting the industrial design firms in Manhattan that you are interested in and seeing if they employ any engineers, and if so what skills they require their engineers to have? You'll learn pretty quickly if there is a market for someone like youself.

    Companies other than consulting

ajak1, what business are you in? Have you found that your education and previous experience in engineering has helped you in relation to the other hats you have to wear (as put by macgyvers2000), or have you had to learn those other skills on your own?

    Companies other than consulting

The Business Practices section of the boards is dominated almost exclusively by discussion about the consulting business. There are those of us not in the consulting business who nevertheless have "business" related questions, but it is difficult to find a good place to discuss them online. I...

    Companies other than consulting

Maybe I should broaden my question: Is anyone on here responsible for running a company that isn't in the consulting business? The reason I am curious is that I've read that around 20% of all CEO's in the US have an engineering background. I suppose though that by the time an engineer has...

    Companies other than consulting

I am wondering if anyone on here has started or been involved in the startup of a company that is not in the consulting business? I am wondering about companies such as manufacturers, construction, recruiting and placement, etc... All of these companies rely on engineers as much as anything...

Does maintaining a social networking page help me gain employment

HgTX, I am not sure either, I'm just saying what I heard. The jist of it was that that information isn't relevant to the employer, so they shouldn't need to look at it. I suppose you could consider that an employer using the information on a social networking site is the same as if they...

Does maintaining a social networking page help me gain employment

I am not sure of the details, but I recently heard a statement from our Privacy Commissioner (I'm in Canada) that said something to the effect that an employer using information from an employees personal social networking site (Facebook in this case) for any reason is illegal. Not only that...

    Residual Stresses from Quenching

The heat treatment procedure was developed for us by our materials consultants. I am not a materials guy, so I need to defer to other experts on this matter. What would be the point of the step cooling if it doesn't reduce the stresses? Stanweld, you are right. It is a stabilization heat...

    Residual Stresses from Quenching

We just had some 316 SS parts solution heat treated after welding, and instead of quenching from 1650°F to 1000°F then air cooling to room temperature as per our procedure, the heat treaters quenched it from 1650°F to room temperature. Would re-running the solution heat treat procedure...
