    I think I now know why I am experiencing the problem. sketchup is a surface modeller and therefore there is no solid body to convert. My next quetsion would be does anyone know of a way of converting surfaces into true 3D? thanks for all your help so far I do have the pro 5 version btw.

    Actually I made a mistake I don't get an error when I try to import it straight into SE(dwg dxf) it just loads up as a draft 2D sketch and I can't seem to change that.
