    Miami Pedestrian Bridge, Part VIII

Well in bridge engineering cracks in steel beams are much more serious than cracks in concrete beams. However, the cracks in the FIU bridge where they can slide a folding rule in are alarming to me. I have designed highway bridges for years before stepping into my current role of inspecting...

Standard formula for double cantilevering beam

The diagrams are also typical for field work when parts have to be lifted or rigged for unloading. The workers measure the total piece length and then compute (using the ratios in the diagram) where to locate the slings. In these cases most folks don't care what the deflection is and that may...

    Slip-Critical Joint Inspection

I would think SC joints were common but not omnipresent. When designing joints that incorporate welding and bolting, SC bolts have to be used unless things have changed since I received my degree.

Cold Formed vs. Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile A572?

Hey folks, I have a question from a supplier asking why we specify hot rolled steel sheet piling in accordance with ASTM A328 (or A572) but we do not mention cold formed sheet piling. Therefore our current specification prohibits cold formed steel sheet piling. It is my hope there may be an...

    "Engineering Authoritarianism"

I appreciate the many cogent observations about the ridicules article. I hope you will enjoy my own humor ... ... then engineers should let others design the things that will harm people. My particular favorite is the humor that anyone who doesn't appreciate what engineers are doing for them...

    Retaining Wall with height variation

I can't help unless you give us an idea of the range of height you need to deal with. For example, if I were asked to design a RW that ranged from 10ft to 15ft, I may well just go with one design. If on the other hand I were asked to design a wall that ranged from 4ft to 32 ft, I would...

Basic Wood Design Question for Joists

Colleagues, I am a bridge designer so I deal with steel and concrete and big time loads so I just don't have a feel for typical residential wood design. I offered to help a buddy design or scope out what it would take to build a shed on his property. He has some grand ideas and I'm trying to...

    Bolt Shank Length

Yes, minimal length bolts are often supplied fully threaded and they carry the designation indicated by ATSE, with the "-T" indicating fully threaded. Only short bolts ar emade this way typically when A325 or A490 are specified. If you need a special threaded length, you will probably need to...

    Anti-Humans

If the environment were the cause for concern they would have us believe, they would insist that all countries adhere to the proposed policies and not just a handful of "developed" countries. Only the virtuous countries need to fear treaties like the Kyoto protocol since only they would attempt...

    Horizontal Force from Concrete Pump

This sounds like an impulse - momentum problem. Apply basic dynamics and you should be able to estimate the forces.

    H20 Wheel load

The 32 kips is an axle load, not a wheel load. The two wheels are spaced a little over 1800mm transverse. I believe there is also a "design tandem" that you should analyze too. This is four smaller wheel loads instead of two larger ones.

    Steel/concrete ration - limit - why actually?

In my experience column reinforcement around the perimeter gets congested (when it must be spliced) at around 2%. Check the formulas for maximum top size of aggregate and some other bar spacing limits and you will see that it will be quite difficult to get anywhere near 8%.

    Pre-stressing Strand as Mild Reinforcement

I have not designed a concrete member in quite some time but I seemt to recall there was a maximum YP allowed for mild steel, which was something around 75ksi. Is this still in the code or has it really been that long?

    Earth-scraper in Mexico

hokie66, Of course an architect designed it ... would an engineer? It is a sci-fi dream to build something like that. The practical problems of excavation and shoring during construction will pursuade them to do something else. Holding back the load after it is built shouldn't be a problem...

Where in the world is Greg Locock?

That's OK. I used 1.2 Hz for the calculations because it yielded the highest amplitude. This fits well with 1-1.5 since it is in the middle of the range. It is only a 1DOF undampened vibration model. There is no need to fine tune something with such limited response in the model. But...

Where in the world is Greg Locock?

Thanks Greg. I can't tell you how shocked I was to open this thread and see 7 responses. I was wondering, "How many times does Greg have to tell me his address?" It is clear you're a popular guy 'round these parts, which says alot about you, Greg. Thanks for the help. I'm looking forward to...

Where in the world is Greg Locock?

Greg, I developed a solution to a highway paving problem and now my collegue asked me to write a paper on it. Well, I wrote a bunch of stuff on my model and some others added a few things and submitted it for publication. a reviewer asked me to "cite" my source for a statement that automobile...

    Women Engineers....

Sorry that I didn't have time to read all the posts above but I want to throw this out there. Is it any more important to get women into engineering than it is to get men into hairdressing? If so, why?

Residual Stress in Structural Steel Design

What loading are you concerned with? I presume you are only considering wind load because you call this a flagpole. Sounds like an architect's dream to me.

    145' Aluminum Pony Truss Bridge

Does the other company splice their bridges or do they only ship the spans as single pieces? Shipping extremely long things is a permit problem for DOTs. Is there a reason you want to stick to aluminum? There are a couple companys that do this in steel all the time. For my part, in many...
