I can't find anything in FM Global data sheets that addresses the addition of sprinklers to the ductwork but even if I did I would want something from FM Global but...
I have done the insides of a roasters and kilns but never the ductwork.
I am just curious if anyone has run into this?
High...
The only time I have been required to install a redundant pump, diesel and electric, was the call of the insurance carrier (FM Global) at a very large facility.
cdafd,
The local AHJ is fully aware of the project and will not issue an occupancy permit until a fully approved sprinkler system is installed.
Scrap everything that is there including the underground line because everything is wrong.
Travis,
Not by a licensed contractor of any kind.
My understanding is that the work was done by a son-in-law with zero knowlege (duh?) about sprinklers for the extra money.
No drawings of any kind.
Over my years I have seen some pretty poor installations but this one takes the lead prize!
cdafd,
It's maybe 4 months old now since completion.
I can guarantee that the AHJ never knew this job existed as permits were never applied for. Indeed no drawings or calculations were ever created.
I never turned it in it is not my business. I told the owner we would have to tear it all...
The photo of the attic is actually over the weld shop itself. 100% CPVC.
They called me to ask if I would "certify" the system which is something I would never touch. I saw it, laughed and left.
It's a 12,000 sq ft welding shop and the owner thought he could save some money by installing it himself.
No drawings, no calculations just 100% CPVC pipe and pendent sprinklers used for upright and sidewalls.
No tamper, flow switches, inspectors test, aux. drains and no need for a main drain...
Unless you are a PE or FPE I would not make any attempt at interpolation. Very dangerous thing to do.
Laced tires are a killer and while I don't know why but it has always been that way.
I did a lot of work at tire plants and I've never seen laced tire storage. Make sure they are doing or...
Appears to be an FM Global job.
Yes, your pipe will be large but you have no options with the design criteria given.
I would look at a 2,000 gpm pump rated at 160 psi which should provide a churn of 165 to 170 psi.
I assume the pump will be supplied by a ground storage tank.
Yep, you might...
I am 99.999% certain there is no "adjustment" that can be made other than building the building exactly as shown on the approved architectural drawings.
Get the architect of record involved and he will tell the general contractor what he is required to do and that is to tear whatever is in the...
cdafd,
I am all for designing a fire sprinkler system it is something I have been doing since 1974 which makes it 50 years.
It is not the architects job to design the sprinkler system but it IS his job to tell me what standard to design to. Only the registered architect of record, that is the...
The question whether or not the mechanical room requires a ceiling IS NOT ours to make!
When I speak of "ours" I am referring to the majority on the forum who are most likely state licensed fire sprinkler designers who hold NICET III or IV certification.
While I am 100% sure the closet...
If it won't freeze you might be able to use residential uprights.
As far as freezing conditions that again is in the registered architects circle of responsibility to tell you.
I guess you could say I design every sprinkler system I have in accordance with NFPA #13 unless the registered architect tells me otherwise and do that in writing please.
That is our get out of jail free card. It is his call and never ours.
I would insist that be the architects call and not yours (ours).
Will the tenant have access to the entire attic or just a portion over his living unit? This should be answered by the registered architect.
Perhaps the architect is figuring a rated partition between the tenants attic space and...
Designer 82,
That decision is TOTALLY up to the registered architect and NOT a sprinkler designer.
Here is how I see it working.
I am a NICET IV and have been designing systems for nearly 50 years now, my first NFPA #13 was 1974, and if I have learned anything it is that I am NOT an...
By dry standpipe I take it you are talking about a standpipe with a dry pipe valve and not a manual standpipe?
How many standpipes are in the building? 2? 3? Just curious.
I also take it the building does not have a sprinkler system. Today this would not happen but what if the building was...
