    T.I.G. Welder or Welding

Could it be that ASME had to change the nomeclaure in order to maintain the perception of a Higher Authority?

Silver Soldering Copper Pipe - Flux or no flux?

Yes, flux is required when silver soldering. It is also required when low temperature soldering. Since you have asked if flux is required I must assume you have never tried soldering before. That leads me to ask if you need the additional benefits of silver soldering over the common low...

How to ramp-up pressure slowly on an RO unit

ProjectEng, Are you solving an existing problem or solving a problem that might exist? The reason for that question is, there are thousands of RO systems out in service that do exactly what you describe, start and spike from 0 to 200 psi without identifiable problems. Is it the best...

    Vacuum requirements

In an old copy of "HANDBOOK OF CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS", published by "THE CHEMICAL RUBBER PUBLISHING COMPANY", there is a table of Vapor Pressure for Organic Compounds(Pressures Less Than One Atmosphere). The table gives the temperatures at which the vapor pressure of the...

    DMM read 142.2 V on nom 120 V source w/ poor conn.

jOmega and electricpete, Thanks for your comments. I need to clarify a couple of points. First is, I have been told and believe there has been no wiring changes in the last six months. This would tell me if induction voltages were the problem, it would have been a problem for the last six...

    DMM read 142.2 V on nom 120 V source w/ poor conn.

I worked on a 120 VAC system that had a water conductivity instrument with a 125 mA time delay fuse that had been blown. I first replaced the instrument and after 30 hours, the second instrument's fuse had blown. A 250 mA fuse was installed and it blew immediately. I placed a DMM on the power...

    Way of designing

Massey, You have discovered a very key fact about the way our minds work. That is, your mind works best when not stressed. I have read a book by an author named Alfonso Lopez, titled "Double Your Capacity In Two Hours". He can be reached at alfonsoafrica@yahoo.com. It is very...

    Agitator for Tank

I downloaded the spreadsheet noted by MJCronin from Sharpe and found that it apparently does not consider viscosity in the Hosepower calculation. I changed the viscosity values from 1 to 1000000 and it did not change the horsepower. Be careful!

PLC as an astronomical time clock

Tuxedo, The only suggestion I would have is to use the switch contacts on a mechanical astronomical timeclock as inputs to the PLC. The mechanical time clock is relatively inexpensive and the PLC could handle the rest of the logic. I didn't say it was a great idea. Good luck.

    Disposal of Demineralized Water

I do not have any experience, but I do have a suggestion. Mix liquid fertilizer into the demin water at the rate of 100 ppm. You no longer have demin water, just some exceptionally good quality fertilizer. Good luck!

Heating a pump head with hot water

I understand the reason for your question now. I'm not aware of any bladder as you asked. The next thought that comes to mind is using heat trace and the better insulation you talked about. It seems it would be easier to fab. I also wonder if you are getting some cavitation, hence cooling...

Heating a pump head with hot water

Wouldn't it be easier to use a heat exchanger just prior to the pump suction and then insulate the pump?

    Oil + Air Vacuum Pump

You might investigate using a liquid ring vacuum pump with the oil as the liquid.

Annular Snap Fasteners and the Like

If you were able to use a suction plate and pulled a good vacuum, the 8 inch square plate would allow over 900 pounds of separating force.

    NPSM Hex Nut Source

Does anyone know of a source of 18-8 stainless 1/4 - 18 NPSM Hex Nuts? Machinery Handbook defines NPSM(National Pipe Straight Mechanical), but they seem to be a bit rare. I need a few(7) for a prototype. Thanks for the help.

    Freezing Temp of Glycerin?

According to my C.R.C. handbook the melting point of Glycerol is 17.9° C. A note is added that it "solidifies at a much lower temperature".

    Precise-High Capacity Material Handling

Would it be possible to locate the magnets and machine the "hole" if necessary and then install the vacuum tube?

    Threaded Bolt Selection

Machinery's Handbook gives the specifications for microscope objective threads. They are for one diameter only, 0.800 inch with a pitch of 0.027778 inch (36 threads per inch). You might consider using a stepper motor to rotate the screw. The rational here is that a steeper motor can be used...

    "See saw" balance/instability

Let me offer an illustration of what I think ivymike is trying to say. If you take a tee with a short branch and hang it from the end of the branch, it will hang level if the center of gravity of the tee exists at the intersection of the runs and the branch. If the tee is pushed down on one...

DESIGN A SYSTEM TO MOVE A VACUUM FILTER

GregLocock, I hadn't heard the term "square drive" before and your example of the cross slide power drive on a lathe finally hit home. Some of us Texans need positive reinforcement, sometimes applied with a ball bat. Seriously, in my neck of the woods, the most common name of that...
