Sometimes Invalid Guide String refers to a tangency issue. If your guide string is comprised of multiple curves I would check there.

Under Depth in the Form and Dimensions area of the Menu you can access Measure. You can actually access it via Diameter,Depth and Tip Angle. Hope this helps.
