Phi and cohesion for hard limestone?

The book by Hoek & Bray is a good reference on this subject. C & Phi are very much a function of the rock mass status (degree of fracture, spacing of fractures, nature of in-seems...). I also have to go back and re-ask PEinc's question: Why the sheet piles in rock ?? I assume that you'll be...

Cantilever sheetpile wall with sloped fill both sides

I concur with PEinc on his advice. However, if memory serves me right, the angle of the slope in front of the pile (passive side) can (theoretically) be greater than the soil's friction angle only as far as Kp is concerned because it is an 'added' quantity while for Ka it is a 'deducted' value...

    Friction angle of crushed rock

I have to concur with mudman54, especially with crushed aggregates. I have seen references venture beyond the 40 degree mark and closer to the 45, but I have not seen 30.

    Soldier pile software

We've using LatPilePro by Tsoft quite satisfactorily. In additon to the conventional triangular pressure diagrams, it offers several models for Peck, Tshebotariof.

Open question: Are we doing less lab testing?

Education of the Clients and the Engineers. Not easy nor cheap. This is required from us before anyone else because we appreciate the gravity of the situation. It is a long and frustrating road, because it is a continuous effort, but we have been able to achieve some success. We have...

Open question: Are we doing less lab testing?

Funny but very sad. It is good that you have the opportunity to benefit. For us it has been a big problem. Over the last 30 years, our organization have worked hard at establishing a reputation of quality, which naturally comes at a cost, and because the clients' learning curve has been too...

Open question: Are we doing less lab testing?

I hear you Jeff. I too was a consultant for a while and now I am more on the contracting side. Indeed, quite often, we ask the client's permission to access the site and conduct our own soil investigation, and ususally it is an out of pocket cost, just to feel confident enough to price (and...

    Soil Friction Angle

Absolutely. I once had a discussion with a city engineer in the States, and when he ran out of answers, his answer was: I know that we have equations and computer programs available to us. I plug a number and I get a number to use. People with such an attitude do indeed scare me as they do not...

    Soil Friction Angle

BigH, I cannot agree more, to spot check and learn to recognize the order of magnitude of where you should be cannot be overstressed as the computers are dumb animals, and no matter how good the software is, there is always a chance for a bug somewhere. However, it does not have to be a bad...

    Re-use of Existing Foundation

We do a fair amount of this kind of work, and I concur with DaveAtkins. Baring any exceptional past loading conditions or unsusual events which would cast severe doubt on the structural integrity of the foundation the following should answer any potential concern: 1. conduct a new soil...
