House Lot: Can't Find (Old) Surveyor's Pin

Notwithstanding the responses so far, there are a lot of boundary surveyors over at surveyorconnect.com who might have good advice (eng-tips being presumably more about eng/topo surveying than legal surveys).

    Issue with setting out

Another technique is to traverse between the known control points: Traversing is a much more common technique, where you usually set up at one control point, back-sight on another control point (to get proper orientation), measure angles and distance to a new "traverse point", move to the new...

    Issue with setting out

You can use a technique known as "free station" (or "modern resection"): It is usually used to establish the position of your unknown "middle" station, via observations of angles and distances to the a few control points. In your case, you'd make several (to get good averages) observations to...

    Prism compatibility for total stations

What you're referring to is usually called the "prism constant" -- how much is added/subtracted to/from the immediate distance measurement before the result is presented to the user. Yes, you can use different prisms (from other manufacturers) and get good results. However, different...

    Field measuring question

Do you have the bearing and distance of each straight side and the beginning of curve radial bearing and distance plus either the end of curve radial B&D or the delta (deflection) angle? If so, you can easily get the exact area using good cogo software. Copan, by UGL, is a free example of same.

Converting global coordinated grid to a local grid

It's a bit of a Catch-22: if you know exactly how to describe the problem, you know enough that you needn't ask the question! :-) The resource suggested by IRstuff is for converting between UTM and latitude-longitude -- something i didn't address before, but, i assume is not applicable to you...

Converting global coordinated grid to a local grid

You may need to describe your problem in more detail, for a clear answer. Do you already know the relationship (rotation & shift) between your global and local coordinates? If so, you should be able to easily do a transformation of coordinates, by parameters. Do you know both the global and...

How typically a Scale Factor is used on a construction site?

"is the scale factor a compromise between NS and EW scaling errors? How does one reconcile the lack of actual NS scale factor error, with an actual EW scale factor error?" If you have a large area and you only use a single scale factor, then, yes, you are making a compromise. Scale factor...

Terramodel (ADC files) vs. Vista compatibility

I don't know about Terramodel, but i do know that Copan -- a free COGO program from Underhill -- does have issues with vista: it seems to work fine on vista32 but not on vista64.

Prism constant for Nikon mini-prism in corner

".. visit with some local survey firm about possibility of two monuments .." Or even build your own baseline on level ground with a good tape measure. Repeated observations along same should allow you to calibrate your measurement system.

How typically a Scale Factor is used on a construction site?

"Is there no distinction between NS and EW distances, then?" No, a UTM projection, like most (all?) projections used by surveyors, is "conformal" -- which has the very useful property that, at any given point, projection scale factor is the same in all directions. (The other property, also...

To re-level or not on a re-backsight, back to basics

It would help if you clarify your question: Are you using a level or a theodolite/total-station? What do you mean by "re-backsight": a check on an existing backsight obs, or a new set of obs that uses the same BS as the previous set?

How can we get setup data from a Leica TCR705 .gsi file?

How can we get setup data from a Leica TCR705 .gsi file? We know the setup data (at, BS, HI, etc) are recorded -- we can scroll to them in the instrument -- but when we upload the .gsi file to a computer, only shot data (to, HA, VA, SD, HS, etc) get transferred, no setup data. We don't have...

    Traverse Loop for closure errors

I'd still recommend Copan from UGL (though i'm biased). It can calculate, and adjust, closures for "raw" traverses (ie, those having backsight and foresight angles, vertical angles and slope distances), and for "reduced" traverses (ie, those having bearings and horizontal distances). And it's...

    Traverse Loop for closure errors

Could you clarify what you mean by "help me find the error for traverse closure"? Find out what the error is (diff between "true" and computed coords)? Find out what caused it (small random errors, small systematic errors, or large blunder)? Either way, sounds like a basic surveying problem.

    Traverse Loop for closure errors

Do you wish to adjust traverses to reduce closure errors to zero? I would think all survey software does that. For a free tool, check out http://www.underhill.ca/Software/Copan/Windows/CopanWin.php
