Thanks for valuable feed back, guys!
Jockey pumps are used in the system.
The piping system is extensive with fire ring mains serving hoses, hydrants, water canons, sprinklers, foam systems etc.
Elevation levels exceed 10 metres by far.
There are definitely air pockets in the system and...
We have a firewater pump system where the piping has been ruptured when the pumps started. A "top up" vessel was then installed to eliminate the possibilities for water hammering to occur. This pressure dampening helped. However, pressure peaks are registered on the gauges which show peaks way...
Thank you C2it
Surely it would be better to move it. Usually that is what I make the piping designers do. However, ever so often I come across designs where an o'let is connected to fittings.
In the reducer case I'm investigating whether bonney forge will be able to deliver a suitable o'let to...
Thanks for responding,pennpiper.
The branch is a continuation branch bypassing a valve.
Two 3" o'lets are involved. Upstream the valve the WOL is welded to a straight pipe. Downstream it is to be welded to an ASME B16.9 14"x12" sch 40 carbon steel eccentric reducer. The pressure is 51.1 barg...
Can anyone tell me what options I have as a piping stress engineer when it comes to evaluating a pipe designers decision to weld o'lets to fittings such as reducers, tee's and elbows?
I have seen many designs where a weldolet is fitted to an elbow or tee, and I wonder how this is documented...
Gentlemen, Thank you for responding.
But I still don't feel I have gotten the full answer to my questions.
Unclesyd is obviously on the track, and I would surely appreciate to learn what the response is when questioning the local piping supply company whether they receive any extra load...
During my years as offshore engineer we have obtained a set of allowable loads from a supplier that our piping system may induce on a valve. Typically welded valves or valves with mechanical hubs have been of concern.
The vendor has been required to allow for moment and forces in the magnitude...
Our Process deparment has asked a question regarding allowance for increased pressure.
In ASME B31.3 para. 302.2.4 it is described allowance for increased pressure rating (33% or 20%).
Increased pressure is allowed if the duration is within limits described by the Code.
Process is asking...

It would be interesting to know whether or not full penetration welds, as indicated in figs. 328.5.4A, B, C in ASME B31.3, were used for the failing trunnions your stress engineers are talking about.

I have seen trunnions welded to elbows on offshore platforms and as solutions in company pipe support standards. My opinion is that these designs lack good engineering judgement when used extensively. However, perhaps a pad reinforcement might be the only solution, but should then be the last...
Reciprocating pumps are used in mud systems while drilling offshore. We are talking 2500lbs systems with 6” or 8” piping. The discharge piping systems are sometimes designed poorly, resulting in reckless shaking and demolished pipe supports. (Rectifying measures have been performed before pipe...
