    Welded Beam Ridge Connection

Thank you. I knew it had to be hidden in there somewhere.

    Welded Beam Ridge Connection

I'm cutting and welding a steel W section to support a ridge beam. The roof slopes 4:12 each way. I'm looking for a prequalified CJP welded connection for the flanges. All of the prequalified connections are for either parallel plates (butt joint) or plates at ninety degrees (T or C joint)...

Wood frame building over concrete tilt up

Yes, it's all new construction so the walls can be designed to fit the demands. And the architect is very creative and wants one story wood over one story tilt up so that's what I try to give them. If it's a new and unique concept, they'd love it even more. I'm only doing the feasibility study...

Wood frame building over concrete tilt up

It will be new construction. The top story wood framed portion will be sleeping quarters with a deck, maybe an R-2 occupancy. Is there a problem with residential on the top floor?

Wood frame building over concrete tilt up

I have an architect who wants to put a one story wood frame building over a one story (20' high)concrete tilt up building. Three of the exterior wood shear walls would set on the tilt up walls, the fourth would be over a truss girder. The difference in textures and appearance is appealing to...

    Historic Steel Pipe Columns

Hi U4ENIK, I was removing a mezzanine floor from the column, not adding any loads, so I didn't do any work with the beam seats. My issue was with the unbraced length of the column. Good luck to you, that's another interesting problem you have.

    Historic Steel Pipe Columns

Thanks yaschief. I drilled a hole in the column to find the wall thickness and confirmed it on two of the columns with UT. It was 1 1/4" thick and very hard. That has to be cast iron. That was my conclusion on the seats too, the seats are cast with the columns. And thanks to slideruleera...

    Historic Steel Pipe Columns

Thank you Littleinch, I never considered that they could cast a column that way, I'll have to investigate that further. That would explain a lot.

    Historic Steel Pipe Columns

Here's a picture. If I can get the upload to work.http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=2468f54e-fd44-4952-aa97-39a2a8869eb0&file=1501_555_MktSt__20150113_015.JPG

    Historic Steel Pipe Columns

Thanks SlideRuleEra, those are great references. And I still have my K&E Decilon Slide Rule in it's original (beat up) box. I was the last student in college to go to a calculator.

    Historic Steel Pipe Columns

Thanks. There's a steel beam seat welded to it which makes me think it's steel. There's also a bolted connection from the steel beam to the beam seat which I'm still investigating. This is in the 1st story of a 4 story historic building and supports concrete walls above so I believe the column...

    Historic Steel Pipe Columns

Thanks, I have an older copy of that and it does not included steel pipe. Does the newer version have them? I also have the book "Iron and Steel Beams 1873 to 1952" but that omits pipe too.

    Historic Steel Pipe Columns

I have steel pipe columns in a building built in 1908 in San Diego. Can anyone let me know where to find information on pipe manufactured in this era?

    MPC Beam designation

I have the same issue on a shopping center in San Diego that was designed in 1980. For example, MPC18 1/2 x 25.7 (15) 1/4. I take that as a steel composite beam with camber. (But who'd camber something 1/4"?) I can't see it because it has sheet rock over it. A general section shows it like a...

    Anchor Bolt Design for SLRS

Just curious, when designing the anchor bolts for a steel SLRS, if you use the system overstrength factor, do you also use the 2.5 factor when you have brittle failure on the anchor bolts. Seems like overkill to me. That's potentially 3 x 2.5 = 7.5 x forces.

    Beams with Torsion

Thanks Civeng80. At worst I'll be able to borrow it from a University library.

    Beams with Torsion

I have a very interesting residence with a number of curved beams that are loaded on one side only. For example, I have a curved beam with a 32' span with a 2' offset to the side at midspan. There is a roof that cantilevers out from 6' to 8' on the outside of the beam with no structure on the...

    Beams with Torsion

Chicopee, your answer demonstrates that is that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

    Beams with Torsion

Does that include torsion on steel tubes or is it for W shapes only? That's the real basis of my question.
