    U stamp question

Clarification...the modification does not involved welding. Size of the opening was increased. Thanks

    U stamp question

When does a "U" stamp vessel become certified? Is it after the U stamp has been applied, or after the data report is submitted, or after the vessel has left manufacturing facility. We have a U stamped vessel on which one of the openings needs to be modified. Vessel has not yet left the...

    Limits of Reinforcement

Thank you both for your responses. I had a hunch but didn't quite have a good reason to disregard the excess material in the "nozzle". Now I do - Thanks again.

    Limits of Reinforcement

SnTMan, The nozzle that goes on the opening has a NPT (tapered) thread. so no welding is necessary - the pipe threads would be installed with PTFE tape. My question is, for such an unwelded construction, would extra material in the nozzle count as having reinforcing value? Thanks!

    Limits of Reinforcement

Is it permissible under code (VIII-1) to consider material (over and above the thickness required to resist pressure) in threaded (NPT) fittings as having reinforcing value? I could not conclusively decide one way or the other after reading UG-43. Thanks in advance to the forum for your feedback!

    Displacement channel calibration

Under what circumstances would calibration of displacement channel (in tension) be necessary on tensile testing equipment?

Help on calculating required relieving capacity

Thank you David for your response. Would you agree though that the customer is in a better position to determine the required relieving capacity than the manufacturer? Is this responsibility placed on the customer anywhere within the ASME code? Since the API is not really a "code" I would...

Help on calculating required relieving capacity

I have found various sources (including manufacturer's websites) that tell me how to determine relieving capacity of a burst disk given a relieving pressure and disk size. I have read articles on Coefficient of Discharge and Resistance to flow methods. However, how do I determine the REQUIRED...

Use of titanium grade 4 for pressure vessel applications

Thanks all for your help. It seems I will need to look at alternatives to using gr 4.

Use of titanium grade 4 for pressure vessel applications

But the specified min elongation requirements for Grade 4 and Grade 9 in Section II-B are the same (15%) [II-B for SB265]

Use of titanium grade 4 for pressure vessel applications

Use of Titanium Grade 4 (UNS R50700) is not permitted for use in PV applications per ASME VIII-1 as it is not included on Table UNF 23.4 Any idea why? Any code cases available that permit its use at all? I have looked at a lot of places and just cannot figure out the reason it is excluded and I...

use of materials from II-D Table 1A for bolting

thanks a lot jamesl! wonder why there are such big differences in the safety factors for materials in Table 3 versus those in table 1A/B.

use of materials from II-D Table 1A for bolting

All, Is there anything within VIII-1 preventing/prohibiting use of materials from ASME II-D table 1A/1B as a bolting material if the same is not listed in table 3? Thanks in advance for your help!

    ASTM E8 Help

Greetings to all... We are trying to set up a tensile tester (United) in order to perform some tests per ASTM E8. As I read thru E8, I am having some trouble understanding the differences between constant strain rate and constant cross head speed. In my mind the two are the same since "strain on...

    Accreditation required?

We are a manufacturing company and are looking to bring tensile testing capability in-house. We test to ASTM E8 for ASME VIII-1 vessels. Is a 17025 accreditation recommended or required? Any issues if we do not maintain such an accreditation? Thanks to all responders in advance.

    Tensile Testing Question

EdStainless, would you think it might be possible to maintain 2 load cells based on the two differnet calibration standards. if I were to not use an extensometer, would that simplify things? thanks for your input...

    Tensile Testing Question

Thanks Ed for your response. Our volume of work is actually fairly evenly divided between the two systems. Can you advise me as to where the calibration would typically be done - on site or at the load cell/extensometer manufacturer's site? Also, do you think it might be possible to lay down a...

    Tensile Testing Question

Dear Ron, Thank you for your response. The outside vendor we currently use maintains two different machines calibrated to the two standards/specifications. I extrapolated this information to draw a conclusion that they did it because of difficulties with switching between standards. Do you not...
