A good rule of thumb is that if the NFPA document has a number, like NFPA-13 Fire Sprinkler Installation, NFPA-268 Exterior wall ignitability, NFPA-70 National Electric Code, NFPA-5000 Building Code, then it is a code or standard. If it does not, then it is a reference document.
